Long summer days and vacations are so close you might be able to taste the smell of sunscreen in the air.
Many of you may be adding the finishing touches to your Disney World vacation plans, and included in that is deciding which days you should purchase Genie+ — Disney’s paid “skip the line” system. Buying Genie+ is not technically necessary and there are several ways to get short wait times without it — like by rope-dropping the parks (getting there extra early before the official opening) and or by waiting until the late evening and riding popular attractions just before park closure. But, can you really escape a Genie+ purchase right now, or are wait times simply too high to avoid it? Let’s take a look.
Wait times generally ebb and flow throughout the day, often giving visitors reprieve from long lines in the early mornings and late evenings. But it seems that lately, wait times have consistently remained high for most of the fan-favorite rides.
If you take a look at some of the wait times from May 22nd, 2023 below, you’ll see that many popular rides (Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Test Track, Slinky Dog Dash, and Avatar Flight of Passage to name a few) had wait times that remained ABOVE an hour for most of the day (with some exceptions along the way).
On top of that, many rides experienced closures at numerous points throughout the day, which could have increased wait times at other surrounding attractions.
Take Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, for example, its wait times were as follows:
- 9AM — 75 minutes
- 10AM — 45 minutes
- 11AM — 90 minutes
- 12PM — 90 minutes
- 1PM — 75 minutes
- 2PM — 95 minutes
- 3PM — 90 minutes
- 4PM — 60 minutes
- 5PM — 50 minutes
- 6PM — 70 minutes
- 7PM — Temporarily Closed
- 8PM — Temporarily Closed
- 9PM — Temporarily Closed
- 10PM — Temporarily Closed
It only dropped below an hour at 2 points and was closed for a substantial period of time in the evening — not great.
So can you avoid buying Genie+ right now? Maybe. You can still use the strategies we mentioned above — rope dropping or staying late to get on rides just before the park closes to skip some of the lines, but it may not work at some of the popular attractions and ride closures in the evening could throw off your plans.
You can also use Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening Hours (two hotel perks) to get more out of your day, but even then, the long wait times that pop up throughout the day might have you feeling stuck. Take a look at the wait times from May 22nd, 2023 below. If they feel too long for you and your group, then Genie+ might be something you really can’t avoid purchasing.
If that’s the case, be sure to adjust your budgets and set aside enough cash for Genie+. We’ve seen it reach prices as high as $35 per person per day, but that’s subject to change.

On other days, you may expect low crowds and end up purchasing Genie+ because the wait times are too high for your liking. Use discretion and do what’s best for you and your Disney crew!
