The PROBLEM You Should Expect at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster in Disney World

Things are changing all around Disney World, and one change was made suddenly.

On Friday, May 26th, 2023, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith SURPRSINGLY reopened in Disney’s Hollywood Studios without any kind of formal advance announcement or reveal. The ride had experienced a TON of unexpected closures (some due to technical difficulties) prior to being officially closed in February 2023 for an extended refurbishment. But if you expected the refurbishment to result in the opening of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster without any issues, you’d be WRONG.

On May 26th, we made our way to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster in the evening, only to later experience a sudden closure at the ride. That might have just been a slight bump in the process since the ride did reopen rather suddenly.

But, the problems didn’t stop there. On May 28th, 2023, we noticed that Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster was still experiencing closures. 

In the wait times data below (all for May 28th), you can see that Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster was listed as temporarily closed at 9AM, 11AM, and 4PM. It did list wait times at the other points in the day though.

A Cast Member we spoke to on May 28th, indicated that the ride is still in its “soft reopening” phase. That means it could shut down more than you’d expect (or close early or open late) as the team continues to make any adjustments needed.

Disney’s Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster website still has the refurbishment notice listed but the website did show operating hours for the ride on May 29th. No operating hours, however, are listed for May 30th or May 31st (and some dates beyond that) so it’s important that you review the website and My Disney Experience app carefully on each day of your trip.

You’ll also want to visit the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster queue area in person during your visit to see if the ride is open (despite perhaps not having any wait times listed on the app).

And even after the soft reopening phase is officially over, it’s possible the ride (like others in Disney World) will still be hit with sudden and unexpected closures if it is impacted by technical issues (or other problems).

In other words, don’t expect everything to be perfect here. Still, some of these initial closures could have more to do with the soft opening than technical problems. We will be interested to see if the ride has fewer closures once the soft reopening period has ended. We’ll keep an eye out for updates.
