Back in 1955, Disneyland first opened, which is why the resort is currently celebrating its 70th Anniversary.

One of the park’s opening day attractions, though, is the classic Autopia, which is a ride that basically recreates what it’s like to drive a car (albeit a slow one), complete with gasoline-run engines. According to The Orange County Register, Disneyland just had to pay $56,000 in a settlement over Autopia, which will also change the ride forever.
Disneyland had to pay $56,000 to the California Air Resources Board in 2024 after revealing that the Honda engines used on the Autopia ride vehicles violated state regulations for small off-road engines. However, Disney officials say the fine was due to an “administrative oversight with no impact to the environment.” Disney volunteered to pay the fine to resolve the issue without admitting liability.

Disneyland also agreed to retire the current gas-powered engines in Autopia in early 2027. The new engines will be fully electric. This will also probably make the area of Tomorrowland surrounding Autopia smell better (if you know, you know). Disney has already started to work on a prototype for a fully electric Autopia ride vehicle.

Disneyland’s goal is to secure net zero emissions by 2030 and to reduce its overall carbon footprint, so changing out Autopia’s vehicles is all part of reaching that goal.
We’ll keep an eye out for more changes in Disneyland, so check back with AllEars again soon for more.
