Disney World Executives Share Their Thoughts On MASSIVE Expansion Plans

Walt Disney World is in the midst of HUGE changes, as its biggest expansion projects are currently underway. From Monstropolis in Hollywood Studios, Tropical Americas in Animal Kingdom, and both Piston Peak and Villains Land in Magic Kingdom, there is so much to look forward to!

We’ve all been vocal on how we feel about the expansion plans at Disney World, but how about Disney itself? Well, we just got some insight regarding how Disney executives view the current expansion projects at Walt Disney World, and we’re going to talk about it.

Recently, at the MoffettNathanson’s Media, Internet & Communications Conference, Disney CFO Hugh Johnson spoke about the Disney Company as a whole. He went into detail about everything happening across all the theme parks, the Disney Cruise Line, Disney entertainment and media, and more.

What we were really interested in hearing about was his insight into the multiple expansions happening at three of the four Disney World theme parks. Hugh Johnson stated that without park expansion, Disney World will not have the ability to grow any more in park attendance. That’s right, Disney claimed to be at capacity…right now.

In the presentation at the conference, he pointed this out: “Now we could jam more people into the park, but then the guest experience declines, and that’s actually bad for the brand. So you don’t want us to do that, and we don’t think it’s a good idea either.”

Disney has always tried to keep the guest experience at the forefront of their mind when making decisions, and it’s no different here. Yes, Disney could keep pushing the capacity of the parks without adding new areas. However, it’s not necessarily the best experience for everyone who is paying a lot of money to go to Disney World. So, the alternative is to grow and add more space!

The expansion will provide brand-new experiences and more space, but it isn’t just beneficial for the guests. The CFO stated, “When you put in a big new attraction…you see a surge in demand for it as well. So we tend to fill those things up really, really quickly.”

That is very true! Adding new experiences and attractions is intriguing, and it naturally draws more people to the park. The funny thing is that technically drawing MORE people than before fills in that extra space, which could possibly lead to capacity issues again. However, that’s a conversation for another day.

Unfortunately, if new experiences mean more demand, then more demand means higher prices. That was touched up on during the conference, as he stated, “We have the ability to grow attendance as we expand capacity. I would expect to see both pricing and attendance growth.”

Disney’s growth and expansion are great for us as fans. It means better guest experience, brand-new experiences, and an ever-changing park, allowing for things to always look forward to. For Disney as a company, it’s great for them, as it allows an increase in capacity and more profit over the years.
