Disney’s refillable hotel mug program has long been a favorite of many, with some fans collecting mugs for decades now.

However, despite that popularity, there are definitely a few ways Disney could improve their program going forward, especially compared to their biggest competitor.
Disney’s Refillable mugs are 16 oz. Insulated coffee mugs are sold for approximately $23 at Disney hotels in the resort’s primary counter service location. Those on the Disney Dining Plan also receive a mug as part of their package. Guests are entitled to unlimited free refills on fountain drinks, coffee, and tea from participating beverage locations at Disney resort hotels for their length of stay up to 14 days. Each mug features an RFID barcode, which enables the mug to deactivate when the designated time is complete.

Expand Usage to the Parks
Currently, the refillable mugs can only be used at Walt Disney World hotels (though they’re not limited to only the hotel a guest is staying at), which can make them feel like a cumbersome hindrance for guests who use them at their hotel for breakfast, then must carry them through the parks all day. Compare that Universal Orlando, who offer refillable mugs that can be filled at Coca-Cola Freestyle machines located around their theme parks.

Expand the Presence of Coke Freestyle Machines
Speaking of Universal’s Freestyle machines, they are present across the resort and its theme parks.

In fact, Universal’s Epic Universe even offers exclusive flavors:
- Celestial Spritz: According to Universal, this flavor – located as the name would imply in Celestial Park- is a blend of Seagram’s, along with cherry and orange flavors, and a secret “added tartness” mixed in.
- Screaming Bury: Located in Dark Universe, Screaming Berry blends Fanta Cherry and Fanta Fruit Punch with added grape and vanilla notes.
- Dragon Splash: This Isle of Berk specialty is a “zesty, citrus-forward mix” made with Minute Maid Lime, Fanta Lime, and Mello Yello.

How cool would it be if Disney were to lean into a similar approach, offering exclusive themed flavors in, say, Tomorrowland or Galaxy’s Edge? EPCOT could even offer Freestyle machines loaded with international Coca-Cola flavors around the World Showcase, like a massive scaled version of the classic Club Cool.

Extend the Usage Deadline
So, we’ve established that the mugs are eligible for free refills for the length of the purchaser’s stay, up to 14 days. Imagine if this period were expanded to a year? Let’s be honest, the majority of Disney World guests aren’t staying at on-property hotels multiple times a year, and the small group that does aren’t rebuying the SAME annual mug design every trip. Therefore, extending the length of time the mugs are eligible for free refills likely wouldn’t cost Disney many mug sales and would make the initial purchase feel like a much better value.

Bring them Back to the Water Parks
This was a time when Disney World offered refillable mugs that could exclusively be used at the resort’s two water parks, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. Given that the infrastructure for refillable mug use is already in place, and that more Disney hotel guests will be hitting the water parks this summer as part of Disney’s free water park day hotel perk, which offers guests a free water park ticket on their check-in day, we’d like to see Disney extend the hotel mug refill eligibility to the water parks.

We’d love to see these small changes come to Disney’s refillable mug rules, as they’d make a BIG difference. Stay tuned to AllEars for more on Disney World’s offerings!
