Will Rain RUIN Your Disney World Day? We Found Out.

Picture this: you’re wandering Main Street, U.S.A., in Magic Kingdom, taking in the sights, sounds, and delicious smells, when suddenly, you see it. Ominous and dark, it threatens to RUIN your magical day.

What is this monster that wants to steal your Disney joy? It’s a STORM CLOUD. Now, storms in Disney World don’t have to mean an end to the fun. But they can have an impact on the attractions in the park, and some rides will even shut down in bad weather. Let’s take a look now at how storms can affect ride wait times in the parks!

Yesterday, some afternoon storms popped up (as they often do in Florida) while we were in the Disney World parks, and we saw several rides shut down for a while as a result. In Magic Kingdom, 10 rides were closed at the same time at one point, around 1PM. These included some popular attractions like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Splash Mountain, and Jungle Cruise.

These and other rides were closed on and off for the afternoon, from about 1PM to 5PM. In the evening, we saw high wait times as guests hurried to ride the attractions that they’d missed out on earlier in the day. As a result, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train had a long wait time throughout the evening, never dipping below 55 minutes and usually longer than 80 minutes. Although this ride usually has a long wait time, we often see it fall to lower times later on in the evening.

If bad weather shuts down a ride that you wanted to visit, keep an eye on the My Disney Experience app to try to catch that ride as soon as it opens back up. It will likely have a shorter wait time for at least a little while after it reopens! Check out all of yesterday’s wait times in Disney World to see how the bad weather affected the rides.

In EPCOT, the ride that was most affected by the bad weather was Test Track, which was closed on and off between 1PM and 4PM. After that, it had a wait time of over an hour for the rest of the day.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios seemed to have a rough day in general, and not just because of the storms. Slinky Dog Dash, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster all closed down periodically throughout the day (including in the morning, when there were clear skies).

This park often has rides shut down due to technical difficulties, as the rides here are more popular and sometimes more complex. Rise of the Resistance is especially prone to issues, so we recommend visiting that ride first thing in the morning or getting a Lightning Lane pass for it so that you’re more likely to get on the ride.

If you’re visiting Disney World and you see some rain clouds on the horizon, don’t panic! You can always head to an indoor attraction (like Peter Pan’s Flight, Frozen Ever After, or Na’vi River Journey) to kill some time while you wait for the rain to pass. Or you could duck into a gift shop and do a bit of shopping while you wait for the sunshine to return.

We recommend pulling out your poncho and trekking on, even in the rain! Of course you should take shelter if the storm gets bad (safety first!), but often you can still get on most attractions even in the rain, and you may experience lower crowds for a bit while everyone else hides from the weather.
