The Truth About Last-Minute Disney World Trips — And Why They’re Harder to Book Right Now

While some Walt Disney World guests plan their visits down to the last detail years in advance, others prefer flying by the seat of their pants and making a sojourn to the “Most Magical Place on Earth” at the last minute.

Unfortunately for the latter type of guests, those kinds of spur-of-the-moment Disney World adventures are becoming harder and harder to book.

Arguably, the biggest hindrance to booking last-minute Disney World trips right now is fuel. Due to a confluence of inflation and world events, fuel prices are currently skyrocketing. According to AAA, gas prices in the U.S. in early May were approximately $1.40 a gallon higher than they were at the same time in 2025, and have “reached their highest level since 2022, when the national average peaked at $5.01 per gallon.”

However, any travelers thinking they can simply eschew driving and fly instead may also be out of luck. The same international issues that are contributing to surging gasoline prices are also affecting jet fuel, which in turn is leading to increases in airfare. According to CNBC, the average round-trip domestic flight costs $361 as of early May. The outlet reports that the price of the hat is up about 8% from $335 on Feb. 23rd, and up 19% from $304 in April 2025.

Of course, beyond current events, there are further reasons why last-minute Disney trips have gotten harder to book over the years. Some of the biggest are the number of experiences that Disney encourages guests to prebook. For example, both Advance Dining Reservations (60 days out, and extending 10 days following that 60 from their arrival date for hotel guests) and Lightning Lanes (7 days before check-in for hotel guests, 3 days before their visit for non-hotel guests) can be booked in advance, leaving last-minute guests at a disadvantage, as many experiences will be filled before they get a chance to book them.

Furthermore, Disney is offering a litany of discount offers for the summer and fall. For example, Disney is currently offering the opportunity to save between 15% and 30% at rooms at select Disney Resorts Collection hotels for arrivals from July 30th to October 3rd. While those kinds of deals will be welcome to many cash-strapped travelers, it also means that these rooms are filling up earlier, leaving fewer options for last-minute accommodations.

Of course, there are some things last-minute travelers can do to mitigate some of these issues:

  • Guests unable to acquire Advance Dining Reservations can instead dine at some of Disney’s best Quick Service dining locations, especially if they purchase the Disney Dining Plan’s Quick Service option.
  • Guests who miss out on Lightning Lanes can still take advantage of their hotel guest status by using their 1/2 hour before public opening Early Entry time to make their way to their ride of choice (or as close as possible if it’s not open during Early Entry) to rope drop the ride.

While a last-minute trip to Disney World is still possible, rising travel prices and the proliferation of things that need to be booked in advance have made them much more difficult to book in 2026. Stay tuned to AE for more on Disney travel.
