Taking a Major RISK Might Pay Off in Disney World

If you’re going to Disney World soon, you might be wondering just how long you’ll have to wait in lines to ride the most popular attractions. It’s not uncommon to see 2- or even 3-hour wait times for those big rides, and that means that waiting in line might take up a BIG chunk of your day.

There are ways to get around those standby lines, such as by purchasing Genie+ or Individual Lightning Lanes or by buying a ticket to an After Hours event, where those lines tend to be significantly shorter. But if you don’t want to shell out the extra cash, there’s a potentially RISKY way to avoid long waits.

Many people rope drop the Disney World theme parks, which means they arrive before the parks open (generally at least a half hour before the opening time) and then head straight to their favorite rides to try to get there before a long line forms. But what some people don’t know is that wait times can drop a LOT towards the end of the day as well!

For example, yesterday in Magic Kingdom the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train coaster had a long wait time pretty much all day. Even at 9AM it was a 95-minute wait, and it had a 2-hour wait all afternoon. But once 8PM hit, that wait time started to drop. First it fell to 85 minutes, and by 9PM the wait was only 30 minutes! For that popular coaster, that’s a VERY low wait time.

However, if you look at this schedule of all the wait times in Magic Kingdom yesterday (April 9th), you’ll notice something else happening in the evening: several rides were temporarily closed towards the end of the day. At 9PM, FOUR attractions were closed in this park, including “it’s a small world” and Peter Pan’s Flight (two very popular rides). This can happen when rides experience technical difficulties, which we tend to see happen more frequently in the evening rather than mid-day.

It’s impossible to tell exactly which rides will temporarily shut down at which time, so if you wait until the end of the day to visit your favorite ride, you run the risk of that attraction being closed — and it’s possible that it won’t reopen at all that day.

However, if things go to plan and the rides don’t shut down on you, you could save hours of time waiting in line. For example, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance had a very long wait time all day (reaching 150 minutes mid-day) but then that time dropped all the way down to 40 minutes by 9PM. So it’s definitely a risk to plan on this strategy, but it’s one that could pay off.
