You Should NOT Rope Drop in Disney World Right Now

You may have heard it over and over again: if you want to skip the long ride lines in Disney World, you’ll need to be at the parks for rope drop (a.k.a. arrive earlier than park opening so you can be one of the FIRST let in). But what if that isn’t true — at least not for all rides and not right now?

Rope dropping the parks can be a good strategy for certain rides and during certain periods of time, but sometimes it is NOT the best strategy. And right now might just be one of those times.

For purposes of this post, we’re taking a look at the wait times from May 24th, 2023. Although there were SOME rides with low wait times at rope drop, there were actually MUCH lower wait times at a different part of the day — park close.

Some of Disney World’s most popular rides had very low wait times near the end of the day on May 24th. Rise of the Resistance was at 30 minutes at 9PM (compared to its 80-minute wait at 9AM), and Avatar Flight of Passage was at 20 minutes at 7PM (compared to 40 minutes at 9AM). Peter Pan’s Flight had a wait time of 15 minutes at 9PM (compared to 45 minutes at 9AM).

While it might not necessarily hold for all days and all rides, sticking around until the end of the night (rather than rope dropping) might be a better strategy at times — particularly right now (it seems).

Now, no one is stopping you from both rope-dropping and staying until the end of the night, but doing both could cause you to be quite cranky if you don’t stop for some significant breaks or naps. Still, it’s worth considering whether you can become a night owl for a few days and take advantage of those lower waits as the sun goes down.

Just keep in mind that if a ride temporarily shuts down at night and you’ve left it for the end of the day, you may not be able to get on it at all. It is a significant risk and one you might not be willing to take for must-do rides on your list.
