EPCOT, You Okay Buddy?

A Disney World vacation can be a magical experience that you’ve waited months to enjoy.

There are those times in the parks where everything just clicks. You’re walking down Main Street U.S.A., Starbucks in hand on your way to your first ride. You snagged that Virtual Queue for Guardians of the Galaxy with no trouble at all and get your favorite song when you get there. But sometimes, things don’t go as smoothly as you might have hoped. On August 8th, EPCOT was having a rough time, so if you were there, your day might not have gone according to plan.

Occasionally, Disney schedules routine refurbishments and maintenance on its attractions. Sometimes those closures are only a few days long — like the Haunted Mansion one that’s going on currently — but they can sometimes last a few months, like the one for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster earlier this year. Fortunately, these types of closures are scheduled, so you can typically plan around them.

But, sometimes rides go down unexpectedly, and it can put a damper on your day. Technical difficulties can happen around the parks rather frequently, and unfortunately, EPCOT had a lot of them on August 8th, 2023.

Five separate rides had problems throughout the day! Test Track went down around noon and once it reopened, it had relatively high wait times for the rest of the day. The Seas with Nemo and Friends went down around 1PM and Spaceship Earth went down temporarily in the evening.

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure was closed for part of the afternoon. Journey Into the Imagination was down for the better part of the day and operated off and on from 11AM through 6PM.

So what should you do when rides close unexpectedly while you’re in the park? First, keep an eye on the My Disney Experience app for any changes. Once the ride is back up and running, you’ll be able to see a wait time for it in the app.

You might also want to get your high-priority rides out of the way in the morning. If a ride goes down mid-day, it could possibly remain closed for the rest of the day, and if you didn’t get on it early — you might be out of luck.

Lastly, you might want to consider getting Genie+. Shorter waits mean you’ll have more time to get on your favorite rides, which means if a ride goes down in the middle of the day, it won’t have such a negative impact on your schedule.
