Lightning Lanes are an awesome way to skip the lines at Disney World, but are they necessary?

Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Lightning Lane Single Pass, and Lightning Lane Premier Pass all allow you to skip the standby lines in their own ways. What unites them is that they’re all paid ticket add-ons. As such, you should never buy them without putting in some real consideration (especially if you’re traveling with a family, since those prices WILL add up). If you’re visiting Disney World in 2026, it’s fair to ask whether or not Lightning Lane purchases are actually worth it.
Let’s start with the negative side of the argument. Here’s why you won’t need to buy Lightning Lanes in 2026:
Animal Kingdom will be a ghost town
Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a gorgeous, immersive, and unique theme park experience you can’t get at any other Disney Park. But in 2026? The ride lineup is thinner than ever.

With the Pueblo Esperanza project — a Tropical Americas-themed land replacing DinoLand U.S.A. — underway and closing a major section of the park, the number of rides open will be teeny tiny.

Even when those rides were open, Animal Kingdom was arguably a half-day park anyway — at least if you were going JUST for the rides. The major rides in 2026 will consist of Flight of Passage, Na’vi River Journey, Expedition Everest, Kali River Rapids, and Kilimanjaro Safaris. With some smart planning and maybe a rope drop strategy, you shouldn’t have much trouble getting on all of these attractions in a single day.

The only ride you might struggle with is Flight of Passage, but that’s not covered in Multi Pass anyway — you can still buy a Lightning Lane Single Pass for it if you don’t want to rope drop or wait in line. We’re trying to be fair to Lightning Lanes, but when it comes to Animal Kingdom in 2026, Lightning Lane Multi Pass might end up being a real waste of cash.
After Hours events make Lightning Lanes redundant
Planning to go to a holiday party or After Hours event in 2026? One of the biggest boons of these events is the perk of low wait times for even the most popular rides, in addition to all the snacks and entertainment that come with the event. As separately ticketed events, these special Disney World offerings boast much smaller crowds than a typical park day.

But here’s the trap a lot of guests fall into: They still buy Lightning Lanes during the day. You’ll just be paying twice for the same ride access.

Save your money, take it easy during the day, and then ride your favorite rides 3 times in a row while the park is nearly empty! That’s the beauty of After Hours.
EPCOT’s tiers don’t justify the cost
EPCOT’s Multi Pass Tier One attractions (Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Frozen Ever After, and Test Track) can still pull meaty wait times. But the Tier Two rides can often be walk-ons or have short waits.

Do you really need Lightning Lane for Journey Into Imagination with Figment or The Seas with Nemo and Friends? Doubtful. You’ll save plenty of time just focusing your strategy on the top rides and hitting everything else in between.

There is one exception, however…

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind does garner pretty hefty waits, and you can bypass the standby line by purchasing a Single Pass. But if this ride isn’t on your list of priorities, Lightning Lanes may not do much for ya.
You’re already spending a small fortune
I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: Your Disney trip already costs an arm and a leg. Between lodging, food, airfare, and those must-have souvenirs, it can feel like you need a second mortgage just to get through a week. It doesn’t help that Disney vacations aren’t getting any cheaper.

If you’re looking to save wherever you can, I have to stress that it’s still VERY possible to have fun at Disney World WITHOUT Lightning Lanes. They are, after all, a luxury and not a necessity.

If anything, you can reallocate that cash to something that adds other value to your trip, like a character dining meal or a special souvenir. Sure, you’ll have a tough time riding everything that you want to, but you should have ample opportunity to ride most of what you want without needing to pay extra.

As a reminder, Lightning Lane Multi Pass gives you access to most Disney World rides at a park, Lightning Lane Single Pass is an individual pass that grants access to the most popular attraction at each park, and Lightning Lane Premier Pass grants you one entry to every ride at a single park (for a hefty fee).
