Epic Universe is looking epically hot this summer — and we’re not just talking about crowd levels.

If you’re planning a trip to Universal’s brand-new theme park, there are a few things you’re going to want to know before you jump on that coaster or start mapping out your ride strategy. Summer in Orlando is no joke, and Epic Universe is serving up some new challenges you might not expect. We’re issuing a few warnings this summer to help you avoid being that sweaty, soaked, sunburned mess who wishes they’d just stayed at the hotel pool.
Summer Storms Mean Summer Shutdowns
Let’s start with the big one: the rain. Orlando in the summer is basically a weather roulette wheel, and if you’ve ever been caught in one of those quick-but-violent afternoon storms, you already know what we’re talking about.

When the skies open up, rides shut down. And we don’t mean just one or two coasters. Depending on the storm and how long it lasts, you could see most of the outdoor rides go down all at once. That includes coasters, spinners, anything up high — all temporarily closed for safety. It’s especially painful if you’ve waited in a long line only to be turned around as thunder rolls in. (Been there. Still bitter.)

So, yes — definitely pack rain gear. Poncho, umbrella, whatever works. And if you see clouds starting to roll in mid-afternoon (which they usually do), pivot to indoor attractions, dining, or just take a break somewhere with AC. No shame in hiding out when the lightning alert hits.
The Sun is Basically an Attraction (But Not the Fun Kind)
There’s a spinning dragon ride in the How to Train Your Dragon land, and it might look incredibly fun, but if you’re riding it in the middle of the day, it can basically be an interactive experience called “roasting in the sun while doing barrel rolls.”

This park is beautiful and immersive, but shade is not always easy to come by. Some of the ride areas and walkways are wide open to that brutal Florida sun, and it will drain you fast. The shiny newness of Epic Universe comes with one downside: not a ton of mature trees or natural shade yet. Combine that with reflective surfaces and blacktop heat, and yeah — it gets rough fast.

So if you’ve got little ones or anyone in your group who’s heat-sensitive, plan those outdoor rides early in the day or after sunset. And hydrate. Seriously. Dehydration sneaks up on people here faster than you’d think.
Outdoor Queues = Choose Your Battles
Not all ride lines are created equal. Epic Universe does have a good number of indoor queues, which we’re so thankful for — but not every ride is going to give you that sweet, sweet AC. Some of the lines are outdoors or semi-covered, and while shade helps, it doesn’t beat climate control.

Here’s the thing: covered queues can still be miserable when it’s 95° with 80% humidity. You’re still sweating, still waiting, still slowly melting. If you’ve got a list of must-do rides, it’s worth looking up which queues are fully indoors and which aren’t. Prioritize the outdoor-line rides earlier in the day before it’s peak sun-o’clock.

Also, let’s be honest: no amount of theming makes standing in a heatwave enjoyable.
Pro-Level Rain Strategy: Know Your Shelter Spots
We already talked about the storms, but here’s your strategy to not be the person sprinting across the park in a sudden downpour: scout your shelters before the clouds roll in. Look for indoor dining, big gift shops, or attractions with long indoor queues.

The rain usually doesn’t last more than 30–60 minutes, but when it hits, it HITS. You’ll see people crammed under every overhang in the park. If you’re caught in it, don’t try to power through — just find somewhere cozy and wait it out.

Also, those rain ponchos? Buy them before your trip. Don’t be the person shelling out theme park prices for plastic bags with armholes.
Bottom Line: Epic Universe Is Epic… but Summer Isn’t Playing Around
We’re so excited for everything Epic Universe is bringing to the table. The theming? Incredible. The rides? Wild. The hype? Deserved. But summer in Orlando is out here reminding us who’s boss, and if you’re not ready for the weather, your day can go sideways real fast.
Plan smart. Ride smart. And don’t underestimate the power of sun, sweat, and surprise storms.

In the meantime, we’ll be on the lookout for more updates from Epic Universe. Make sure you stay tuned to AllEars for the latest theme park news!
