Disney’s Hollywood Studios Is Making a Big Roller Coaster Change. Not Everyone Likes It.

There have been little whispers within the Disney community for YEARS. We’ve heard all sorts of roller coaster theories but dismissed them as rumors. Well, after all this time, one of those rumors is actually coming true. The classic Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster attraction in Disney’s Hollywood Studios is getting rethemed.

So, what’s taking over after Aerosmith? *rock ‘n’ roll drumroll, please*…The Muppets.

Unsurprisingly, this announcement rocked our worlds. We don’t know much about this retheme, but we do know that the Muppets will be taking over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, “teaming up with some of music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival.”

So, why is this happening? Here’s the thing. There’s a little section of Disney’s Hollywood Studios called the Muppets Courtyard, which is home to a quick-service Muppets-themed restaurant and a Muppets 3D attraction. Well, this section of the park will soon close to make way for a NEW Monsters, INC land.

That means the cult-classic Muppet*Vision 3D attraction will close! So maybe, to make up for that major blow to Muppets fans, Disney decided to move the Muppets right along to Sunset Boulevard.

A new land themed to Pixar Animation Studios’ “Monsters, Inc.” is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Taking place after the events of the film, Monstropolis need humans’ laughter to power the city. Guests can even ride on a door like Mike and Sully in the iconic scene from the film with Disney’s first-ever suspended coaster.

The internet had a LOT to say about this announcement, including our readers on Facebook. Some people are happy about the news, like reader Lance, who said, “People, come on. The Muppets automatically improve EVERYTHING. This cannot be bad, no matter how you frame it.”

Goodbye, goodybye, goodbye

Others, though, are not so happy about the news. Reader Kelly said, “Who the heck wants the Muppets??! They are outdated and don’t resonate with the younger generation. My hubby and I are from the generation that watched them and they don’t appeal to us at Disney anymore!”

Some fans are indifferent to the Muppets but will miss the Aerosmith songs on Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster. Reader Becky, for example, stated, “We survived its numerous previous refurbishments. I’m sure we will all manage to survive this one as well,” while Linda put it simply: “Meh. I’ll miss Aerosmith.”

Mariana has some ideas for the future of the Muppets! She said, “I’m glad Disney is keeping the muppets alive in some way but have mixed feelings if Rock’n Roller Coaster is the best fit for it?..I’ve always thought of the Muppets as a family show for all audiences and would have loved to see a brand new show where Racing Academy was..but maybe in the future that could be a possibility? However, I’m still curious to see how this gets transformed..they could definitely make a killer pre-show with Miss Piggy, Kermit, and the Electric Mayhem..Pepe could be their PR guy.”

So, what do you think? Are you happy about this news? For a lot of people, it’s a bittersweet announcement. Some readers, like Jim, are still mourning the loss of The Great Movie Ride, adding, “It can’t be worse than the runaway railroad conversion!” Nothing can stop Disney now, right?

We LOVE this ride!

Ultimately, we still have a LOT of questions about what’s next for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. We don’t know which artists will jam out with us on the ride. We don’t know when Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is closing. We don’t even know the story for the new ride yet! But that gives us a lot to look forward to, right?

We have SO MANY questions!

Until then, we’ll be daydreaming about the best rock artist to take over. In the meantime, we’re always on the lookout for the latest Disney news, so stay tuned for more.
