Heading to Disney World this week? You might want to be aware of some attraction closures!

Disney schedules refurbishments for certain attractions throughout the year. The refurbishments can be routine touch-ups or needed maintenance. Five attractions will be closed this week, including a fan-favorite! Let’s look at the scheduled closures between January 11th through January 17th, 2021.
Magic Kingdom Refurbishments
Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover
We got our hopes up last week thinking that the PeopleMover would reopen according to the schedule! The ride was originally intended to open with the Magic Kingdom in July. It was down for several days then was put on the refurbishment calendar. After an extension, the PeopleMover was set to open the second week of January.

Alas, the refurbishment date was extended again! The fan-favorite attraction is now scheduled to remain closed date through January 30th, 2021.

Walt Disney Railroad
The Walt Disney World Railroad and gives guests a unique way to get a tour of the Magic Kingdom. It travels in a full circle around the theme park hitting up Frontierland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland on its way. The train has stopped running temporarily. The interruption comes from the construction of TRON Lightcycle Run.

The massive construction zone is prohibiting the train from running through Tomorrowland. No official reopening date has been set at this time. TRON was originally scheduled to open in October this year. However, construction has been delayed and it’s unclear when the coaster will open. The train may start running once TRON is ready. We’ll keep watch on the news for more updates!

Tom Sawyer Island and Liberty Square Riverboat
The Rivers of America has been purposely drained for a couple of months now. The river usually offers a great view for guests visiting Frontierland and Liberty Square. Two attractions are affected by the river’s refurbishment.

Liberty Square Riverboat is not currently taking guests on a tour of the river. And, Tom Sawyer Island is closed as well. We saw scaffolding on Harper’s Mill building so the island could be getting some work done too. As of now, the refurbishments are scheduled to last through February 28th, 2021.

Animal Kingdom Refurbishments
Kali River Rapids
The water raft ride tends to get guests fairly wet and sometimes even soaked! Disney has closed Kali River Rapids in the winter months for a refurb in the past. This year, the water ride is closed again for the next few months.

Kali River Rapids closed on January 4th and is scheduled to reopen on April 2nd, 2021.

This isn’t the only construction and work being done at Disney World. EPCOT is working towards its transformation and expansions. Over at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, the hotel will get a reimagined entryway and Moana-inspired room refurbishment. And, the Main Street Train Station is covered with a scrim for the time being.
We’ll continue to update you on all refurbishments in the future!
