Tips about Epcot, Magic Kingdom, Resorts and Special Events

EPCOT - My family was reminiscing about our trip last year and my husband reminded me of something I wanted to share: for the Illuminations show in Epcot, pay attention to which way the wind is blowing! We ended up sitting downwind and all the soot blew all over us. We had to close our eyes and duck our heads several times to avoid it! - Sharon Smith

Magic Kingdom - We have a GREAT spot for the afternoon parade in the Magic Kingdom but you have to get there early. After you cross over the bridge into Liberty Square there is a little cart where they handpaint umbrellas. Well, next to that cart is a much larger umbrella mounted into the ground -- SHADE! Even Lady Tremaine, Drizella and Anastasia thought it was a good spot -- while we were viewing the parade in June, they stopped and told us we were the smartest peasants they had seen all day. How kind!! Then the last float in the parade stopped right in front of us and all the characters came off to dance and interact with the crowd. It was awesome!! I am sharing this with everyone on one condition - you have to promise to let us have our spot when we are there next June. - Sharon Stieg

Epcot - When in Epcot's World Showcase pavilions, I try to have my children say at least one phrase in the native language of the Kidcot host or hostess. It is amazing the response that can be elicited from a simple "Cheers!", "Hola, buenos dias!" or my favaorite "as salaam alekem" (Morocco). We have ALWAYS been met with incredible warmth and extra kindness. Take the time to learn a few easy phrases, stand back and watch a world of smiles unfold! - Tom McManus

Wilderness Lodge - Select resorts now have a Resort Photo Session that can be booked up to 30 days in advance of your stay. I just called and spoke to Sheri at the Wilderness Lodge Photo Pass Desk (it's in the lobby by the Mercantile) and was quoted the following: 20 minute private photo session at your resort. 2 Packages available: $49.95 includes sitting fee and 7 - 5x7's $99.95 includes above PLUS all the photos they took on a CD/ROM and the rights to the photo's so you can print them up later. I was told that they take no less than 50 pictures, so if this is a special occassion it might just be worth it to get the $99.95 package! - Elizabeth Kozdron

Magic Kingdom - I recently found out a service that the Magic Kingdom watch store offers. My husband's pin fell out of his glasses. The nearest glasses store was 20 minutes away and we did not have a car. I asked the front desk if there was a watch store in one of the parks. They directed me to the one in the Magic Kingdom. I thought maybe a watch store would have the tools to put the pin back in. The store told me to bring the glasses over. The man had the tools and many pins to try. He fixed the glasses free of charge. We were so, so happy! - Teresa Norman

MNSSHP - For everyone who loves travelling to Walt Disney World during the fall for the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, the Boo to You Parade is one of the highlights of the evening. What most people don't realize, however, is that the Headless Horseman who ushers in the parade by galloping through Magic Kingdom on the parade route, actually originates at the horse stables at Fort Wilderness. He returns there, in full costume and character, after the parade. As you can imagine, it was quite a surprise for my daughter to see him on a pitch-black evening on his return to the stable. It made quite a memorable, spooky tale that she'll remember for a lifetime! - sgriggs EDITOR'S NOTE: On occasion the Headless Horseman has been known to appear Chip and Dales Campfire Singalong in Fort Wilderness on the 30 or 31.

My wife and I have celebrated every one of our 11 wedding anniversaries at Disneyland. To add to our tradition, we get a Fastpass that is marked for that day and covers the time that we were married, i.e. 4 p.m. Then we have a cast member take a picture of us in front of that attraction at the exact time that we said our "I Do's." Between the photo and the Fastpasses, it makes a nice keepsake of that specific day and time. The only drawback is we can see how we have aged over the years. Go out and CELEBRATE! - Michael Greening

Regarding the Birthday FastPass, we were in the Magic Kingdom for my son's 5th birthday and my husband went to the will-call window to get FastPasses for our group. The rest of our group entered the park and headed in different directions... we didn't realize that my husband would need the park tickets for each member of our party in order to get FastPasses for each of us. Unfortunately we spent the first hour of our day frantically calling (thank goodness for cell phones) to get our party back together at the front gate. - Keri

-- Be sure to pick up a special Flower and Garden guide when you enter Epcot so you know where the special seminars and exhibts are.
-- Go to the butterfly garden early in the morning. It gets crowded later in the day.

We went to ESPN The Weekend last year for the first time and found there are a few things to keep in mind to make the most of your time there:

-- While it is possible to get the autographs of the celebrities after they've been interviewed on the main stage under the Sorcerer Mickey Hat, an even better way is to wait until after one of the smaller shows in one of the other venues, such as the Theater of the Stars or after the Dream Job Experience. There will be fewer fans crowding around to meet the celebs who were on hand for the show, and they seem more relaxed and willing to chat and sign, and even pose for photographs, then.

-- Arrive early if you want to get in to the shows like the Dream Job Experience or Stump the Schwab, or any of them really. They fill up quickly. If you want to be close enough to see the athletes, you need to arrive early to make sure you can sit (or, in the case of the shows taking place on the Sorcerer's Hat stage, stand) up front.

-- Arriving at the shows early is also a good way to the catch the athletes for a quick autograph or a photo as they enter the venue.

-- If you plan to also ride the rides while in the Studios, be sure to get your Fastpasses early in the day. The park is much more crowded than usual, and all of those people have to go somewhere while they're waiting for the next show or motorcade -- you can bet they'll be on the rides, too.

You need not carry medications in an ice pack through the parks all day. The First Aid station has a fridge for guest meds, and they are happy to store them for you. The nurse on staff was polite and professional. She allowed my 7-year-old daughter to practice being a self-advocate, and listened patiently to her medical needs. It was a stress-free experience and we could enjoy Magic Kingdom without worrying about heat or spilling. - Tracy Boylan
