Universal Orlando can surprise even the most prepared theme park pros.

You can have the perfect early morning strategy, arrive before sunrise, and still stumble into a crowd situation you did not expect. Things at Universal can change fast, and sometimes those shifts quietly reshape your entire plan. If you have a trip coming up soon and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is at the top of your rope drop list, there is a big update you need to know. Not only has Hagrid’s become even harder to rope drop, but the morning wait situation has also changed in a way that might completely sabotage the strategy you have relied on for years.
Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure has always been a tough rope drop target. It is incredibly popular, and it has a history of opening with packed queues from the moment guests enter the park.

Things reached a new level once Universal officially added Hagrid’s to the Universal Express Pass lineup on May 30th, 2025. Many of us Universal fans were excited to see such an in-demand attraction included, but the impact on morning crowds has become very noticeable.

Recently, we decided to rope drop Hagrid’s ourselves, and what we experienced has confirmed what many guests have been saying. The line now moves significantly slower in the mornings, and that slowdown begins even before the official park opening. Early Entry no longer guarantees a smooth start, and that became clear to us almost immediately.
We walked up to the Islands of Adventure entrance at about 7:40 AM for an 8 AM Early Entry opening. Guests were already lined up at every turnstile, and the crowd behind us grew fast. The honorary family was chosen, the brief announcement played at 7:50, and Port of Entry began letting guests through. Even with an early arrival, the line of people tapping in moved at a slow pace. We scanned in right at 8 AM, which was later than expected given our arrival time, and that delay matters for Hagrid’s.

We reached Hagrid’s around 8:08 AM and saw a posted 20-minute wait. That seemed totally manageable. However, placing our belongings in the locker took only a minute, and by the time we stepped back out, the posted wait had jumped to 45 minutes.

Once we entered the queue, it became clear that the line was crawling. We walked nearly all the way to the room with the dragon eggs before the stop-and-go flow set in.

Even though it was Early Entry, the entire wait ended up taking about an hour, which felt unusual for an 8 AM arrival, and it reflected a wider trend we have seen since Hagrid’s joined Express Pass. The Express merge has created a much slower-moving standby queue, and many guests seem to be using Express first thing in the morning since it now includes one of the most popular attractions in the park.

Basically, this change has made rope dropping Hagrid’s much less predictable. The ideal strategy used to be simple. Arrive early, tap in as soon as the gates open, walk straight there, and enjoy one of the shortest waits of the day. Now that Express guests are entering that queue early and consistently, the standby line bottlenecks far sooner. Even a few minutes of delay at the front gate can cost you a significant chunk of time once you reach the attraction.

There are still a few ways to set yourself up for the best possible shot at a shorter wait.
- Try to arrive at the gates even earlier than before. If you typically aimed for twenty minutes before Early Entry, shift that to thirty or forty. The tapstile crowd forms faster than you might expect.
- Be fully prepared when the gates open. Have your tickets ready to scan and move with purpose toward the attraction.
- Also consider flipping your day. Rope dropping something else and saving Hagrid’s for later in the evening can sometimes work in your favor. Wait times fluctuate a lot, and on certain nights, the posted wait may drop lower than what we saw that morning. Check the app often and stay flexible.

Universal’s decision to add Hagrid’s to Express Pass has definitely created a noticeable shift in how mornings unfold at Islands of Adventure. It doesn’t mean you can’t ride early, but your rope drop plan needs a serious update.
