7 Things Flight Attendants Wish You’d Stop Doing When Flying to Disney World

Whether you’re flying to Disney World or anywhere else in the world, these are some BIG “no-nos” you’ll want to avoid during your flight.

Let’s fly!

Some members of our AllEars team have worked as flight attendants, and they’ve seen it all. Folks flying to Disney World are often filled with so much excitement that sometimes they make some mistakes…mistakes that can irritate flight attendants or straight up cause dangerous situations. To help ease the travel experience and give you the flight experience from the attendant’s perspective, we’re letting you in on seven things that flight attendants wish folks would stop doing on a flight to Disney World — or anywhere!

Let’s jump right in with the first annoyance: Seat switching!

Not Choosing Your Seats Ahead of Time

Our resident flight attendant suggests that if you want to keep your whole party together, you should book your seats together. This is especially important when traveling with children. Simple enough, right? Although many airlines offer ways for families to sit together, it doesn’t always work out that way.  If you aren’t sitting together, do not ask to switch seats with other passengers.

If you expect others to just switch seats with you, reality may be fairly harsh. The process of trying to switch seats causes a ton of stress for both the passengers and flight attendants who are just trying to get rear ends in seats and get those airplane doors closed on time for departure.

It’s also important to sit in your assigned seat. If you move up or try to find better seating, all you’re doing is delaying the boarding process.

Stop Taking Off Your Shoes

What’s up with people taking their shoes off in tight, yet public spaces? We know that flights can be long, and most folks just want to get comfy, but keeping your shoes on is common courtesy to those around you.

This is especially true when you use the lavatory. You don’t want to know what gets on the floor, and you really don’t want to have any of that seep through your socks or touch your bare feet.

Stop Standing Up Before the Fasten Seatbelt Sign is Off

We know you probably have to use the restroom after you’ve landed in Orlando, and you seriously can’t wait, but getting up when the plane is taxiing back to your gate to use the bathroom is SO UNSAFE! A plane can still hit snags or crash while it’s on the ground, and if you’re up and about, you WILL get hurt.

Wait for the fasten seatbelt sign to turn off

It’s important to keep your seatbelt fastened until directed otherwise. Flight attendants will call you out if you break this rule, so to save yourself the embarrassment and minimize potential risk, it’s best to obey the fasten seatbelt light.

Not Having Drink Orders Ready

Our attendant loved seeing all the Minnie ears, listening to all the giggles, and embracing the chaos on flights! It was seriously one of their favorite flights to work. However, they wanted that when parents don’t communicate with their little ones about complementary services, the whole process comes to a crawl.

If you discuss drink orders with your littles before the flight attendant comes to your seat, the whole process speeds up, and everyone — your kids included — gets their drinks and snacks faster.

Stop Playing Your Music Out Loud

If your kiddo is listening to a tablet or if you are watching a video on your phone, you need headphones. Full stop. No one wants to listen to what you’re listening to. As is the case with most communal activities, considering the comfort of others is crucial.

Remember to pack headphones!

Headphones are a travel essential, especially if you plan to watch movies or listen to music. If you forget them, you can always purchase some at the airport or ask a flight attendant if they have any.

Failing to Alert Your Flight Attendant of Entertainment Issues

If there is a problem with your seat screen, please tell the flight attendant before takeoff. It’s way easier to reset the system before you’re in the air!

A movie can change the flight!

It’s never a bad idea to generally check your seat for any issues before takeoff. Better to deal with a potential problem while you’re on the ground than get stuck with it for several hours.

Stop Talking During the Safety Demonstration

You may have heard the rundown a million times, but there’s a reason flight attendants do a safety demonstration before each flight. Not only is it polite to pay attention to someone speaking to you or doing a demonstration FOR YOU, but each plane has different safety features you’ll need to know about in case of an emergency. Do not talk through these demonstrations so you can retain this useful information.

Additionally, if you’re seated in an exit row, paying attention is mandatory — so be sure to lend your flight attendant your full attention.

  1. Once I did ask someone if they were willing to switch their middle seat for an aisle one so that two of my party could sit together. The person actually said yes because we were very polite about it and the seat they got was actually better. So while it is ok to ask nicely and politely, once, be prepared to accept a no and move on. Had they said no, I would have said no problem and we would have gladly kept our assigned seats.

It is ok to ask nicely and politely, once, for a seat switch, but be prepared to accept a “no” as the first response and do not ask any more after that.
