At the top of the list of controversial Disney World additions, Genie+ probably takes the cake for a lot of folks who’ve been visiting the parks for a long time.

This skip-the-line service replaced FastPass+ and allows guests to book return times to rides throughout the day, and once the experiences have been redeemed, they can book more. Seems fun and great, right? Well, it’s super confusing to use, has a lot of rules, and lately, it hasn’t been working properly. Let’s talk about it!
We’re at Disney World every day, and the past few days have been the MOST FRUSTRATING DAYS we’ve encountered as park guests in a long time. The root cause of our frustration? Genie+.

So, here’s what’s happening. When we go to the “Tip Board” section of the Disney World app to try to look at Genie+ return times, everything looks normal. However, when we click on an attraction to actually book that Genie+, we’re met with a “Your selections aren’t loading at this time,” message.

We eventually got it to work for a couple of attractions after trying three different times. These issues have been happening since the weekend, and we noticed that the Lightning Lane queues were REALLY backed up in the parks, while there were hardly any available to purchase on the app. This made us wonder if folks were purchasing individual Lightning Lanes because Genie+ wasn’t working.

The Genie+ selections we WERE able to get weren’t until much later in the day, because of the delays. This could cause a vacationing family to not be able to experience the attractions they want.

Not only is this super frustrating for those who purchased Genie+ and can’t use it, but it’s also frustrating for the folks waiting in Stand By lines, as they’re having to wait longer so that Cast Members can clear the Lightning Lane queue.

The good news is that Cast Members are aware of this issue. The Cast Member we spoke to stated that signing in and out of your app or account should fix the problem.

So… What should you do if you continue to experience issues like these? Well, we’d usually recommend going to Guest Relations, as they’re the ones who can issue you a refund. While there’s no guarantee you’ll get your money back, the folks at GR are usually pretty accommodating. When we went to GR, they told us there was nothing they could do as far as a refund or experience redemption because we were able to book SOME Lightning Lanes. It might be different for you, but this was our experience.
