More parks than ever are cracking down on unaccompanied minors, and if you’re planning a trip without knowing the rules, you could be turned away at the gate.

Over the last few years, major parks have introduced stricter chaperone rules after rising concerns about fights, disruptive behavior, and overcrowding during busy seasons. What started as a handful of temporary policies has quickly turned into a growing industry trend. If you’re planning a summer vacation, dropping teens off for a day at the parks, or traveling with a large group, these rules are worth knowing before you head out the door. From Disney Parks to Six Flags and Universal, here are the popular theme parks currently enforcing some form of chaperone policy.
Six Flags and Cedar Fair Parks (30 U.S. Locations)
Following a major corporate merger and shifts under new management, nearly the entire Six Flags and legacy Cedar Fair portfolio now enforces some version of a chaperone policy. The specifics vary slightly by park, but the framework is consistent: guests 15 and younger must be accompanied by a chaperone who is at least 21 years old.
That chaperone needs a valid government-issued photo ID, can supervise no more than 10 young guests at a time, and must stay inside the park throughout the visit and remain reachable by phone. The policy typically kicks in by 4:00 PM daily, though parks reserve the right to start enforcing it earlier. Guests who appear to be 16 or older may be asked to show ID to verify their age, and anyone who can’t prove it may be denied entry.

Walt Disney World
Disney World’s policy is less strict than some of the others on this list, but it’s still worth knowing. Guests under 14 must be accompanied by someone who is at least 14 years old to enter a theme park or water park.
For attractions specifically, children under 7 need to be with someone who is 14 or older to board. It’s a relatively light-touch policy, but Disney does enforce it.

Disneyland
Disneyland mirrors Walt Disney World’s park entry rule: guests under 14 need a companion who is 14 or older. The ride rule for children under 7 is the same as well. Disneyland adds one layer that Disney World doesn’t: at the Downtown Disney District, all guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM.

Universal Orlando Resort
Universal Orlando’s policy focuses primarily on evening hours at CityWalk. Guests under 18 without theme park admission are required to leave by 8 p.m. unless they’re with a parent or guardian who is at least 21 years old, staying at a Universal hotel, or have a qualifying reservation or ticket.
The adult chaperone must carry a valid photo ID, and one chaperone can cover no more than five guests under 18. Universal Hollywood, meanwhile, enforces both daytime and nighttime Los Angeles County curfew ordinances.

SeaWorld Orlando
SeaWorld Orlando has a chaperone policy in place that can be activated on select dates, and the park reserves the right to enforce it without prior notice. When active, guests 15 and younger need a chaperone who is at least 21, with valid photo ID, to enter or remain in the park.
One chaperone can supervise up to 10 younger guests, must stay inside the park, and must be reachable by phone the entire visit. Guests 16 and older who are unaccompanied may be asked to prove their age, and anyone who can’t may be turned away. The policy covers all ticket types, Fun Cards, and annual passes.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay uses a similar policy structure to SeaWorld, and that’s not a coincidence since both parks are part of the same company. When the chaperone policy is active, guests 17 and younger need a chaperone who is at least 21 with valid photo ID.
The main difference from SeaWorld’s version: one chaperone can only supervise up to five guests, not ten, and the age threshold is 17 instead of 15. Like SeaWorld, the policy can be activated at any time without prior notice.

Fun Spot America
Fun Spot America has one of the broadest policies on this list. A responsible adult must accompany any guest under 21 years old while in the park. That’s right: 21. If you’re planning a trip with teenagers or young adults, this one definitely requires some advance planning.

Chaperone policies aren’t going away, and if anything, more parks are likely to adopt or expand them as the industry continues to prioritize guest safety and overall park experience. Whether you’re a parent planning a solo kids’ outing or a teen headed out with friends, knowing these rules ahead of time saves everyone from a stressful situation at the gate.
