While it may feel like 2026 has only just begun, the second half of the year — and the Atlantic Hurricane Season — are nearly here.

Given Central Florida’s location directly in the path of many of the season’s storms, anyone taking a trip to Walt Disney World, the Universal Orlando Resort, or any of the area’s other tourist attractions needs to keep the potential of a hurricane in mind when preparing for their trip.
Let’s begin with the basics: According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the official hurricane season for the Atlantic basin is from June 1st to November 30th, but tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after these dates. Furthermore, the NHC states that the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is September 10th, with most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October.

In the context of Walt Disney World vacations, that covers near the entirety of the busy summer season, as well as the fall, including major events like Halloween and the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival.
Guests with visits planned for these events in 2026 may be heartened to know that Colorado State University’s Tropical Cyclones, Radar, Atmospheric Modeling, and Software Team is predicting a slightly tamer than usual season, thanks to El Niño activity. According to the researchers, 2006 is currently predicted to have 13 named storms over 55 storm days, down from the 1991-2020 average of 14.4 and 69.4, respectively. Six of those storms are predicted to turn into hurricanes (a pair of which are predicted to turn into major hurricanes), down from the average of about seven and three, respectively. The 20 total hurricane days and five major hurricane days are also down from 27 and about seven days, respectively.
However, CSU also emphasizes that, “coastal residents are reminded that it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season. Thorough preparations should be made every season, regardless of predicted activity”, a lesson Disney guests would be wise to remember as well.

So, what should you do if a hurricane is forecast to hit during your scheduled Disney vacation? Well, Disney’s official policy is as follows: “If a hurricane warning is issued by the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area—or for your place of residence—within 7 days of your scheduled arrival date, you may reschedule or cancel your Walt Disney Travel Company Disney Resort hotel packages and most room only reservations (booked directly with Disney) without any cancellation or change fees imposed by Disney. Most room-only and vacation packages can be modified or cancelled online, including changes to travel dates.”
Meanwhile, if a hurricane happens to hit while you’re at Walt Disney World, you should hunker down at your hotel and follow any instructions given by Cast Members. During these times, Disney historically does their best to provide essentials, and even provides entertainment like character appearances to keep the spirits of guests (especially kids) high.

The Atlantic Hurricane season is set to begin in just a few weeks at the start of June, and last through November with an August-October peak. If you find yourself with a Walt Disney World vacation booked during that period, be sure to stay vigilant of forecasts to prepare. Stay tuned to AllEars for further coverage of the season.
