CHANGES to How You Buy Genie+ Now in Effect in Disney World

As the summer season continues to ramp up, so do the wait times all throughout Disney World.

Disney Genie+ can save you time in line.

If you don’t want to waste your valuable time in line, there’s a way to SKIP the waits! Disney Genie+ is the paid way to skip the lines at several popular attractions throughout the parks via Lightning Lanes. Since its debut in October 2021, Disney Genie+ has gone through some changes. Disney recently announced that another update was coming to the service, and those changes are now in effect.

As of June 8th, 2022, guests are no longer able to purchase Disney Genie+ ahead of their park visit. When Disney first rolled Genie+ out, guests with multi-day tickets or vacation packages were able to buy the service as an add-on in advance for the duration of their trip.

But now Disney Genie+ is ONLY available to purchase through the My Disney Experience app on the date of your park visit. This applies even if you want to use Genie+ every day of your trip.

This change is in place now for dates remaining in 2022 and 2023.

Lightning Lane at Princess Fairytale Hall

Basically, this means that ALL Disney World guests will only be able to buy Genie+ on the day of their visit through the My Disney Experience app, one day at a time.

This is in Town Square Theater on Main Street, U.S.A.

Keep in mind that Disney has said Genie+ purchases will be available one day at a time “subject to availability.” Be sure to check if Genie+ is available to purchase during your stay. Because it is “subject to availability” you may want to make that Genie+ purchase EARLY in your day to give yourself the best chance to grab it.

Guests looking to purchase Disney Genie+ to skip the lines can generally do so beginning at midnight the day of their park visit via the My Disney Experience app. That way, when the time comes to choose your first Lightning Lane at 7AM you’re ready to go!

If you previously purchased Disney Genie+ in advance for an upcoming Disney World trip, you won’t be affected by this change. This change only applies to new Genie+ purchases. For now, this change is only taking place at Disney World.

  1. No I haven’t and I never want too. WD co. Has gone so WOKE and with all the new changes We ex-WDW kids won’t be returning to WDW. This is sad because for the past 49 & 1/2 years my wife and I spent every holiday, vacation, hundreds of weekends at WDW PLUS all Anniversarys. We missed to dates due to family matters that took us up North.
WDW is no longer the place to be happy so we will spend our money elsewhere.

    WDW has terrible leadership!
The Board of Directors are no better.

    A SHORT SUGGESTION…
Treat you Hoter Resort paying guest better.

In order for guests to lock in Park visits one must upon making Resort reservations seek out Park availability dates, then secure Dining Reservations.

When we stayed at various WDW Resorts we had access to all Parks seven-day per week, plus other reservations but now due to high level management all that has changed for the worst.

My suggestion is; Modify your Park entrance to open at 10:00AM and no earlier.
By doing this people who are staying at YOUR Resort Hotels spending a lot of money daily, would be allowed early access to all Parks prior to allowing people who are staying off-property and who spend their money at other hotels for lodging. Food. Items to take home etc.

Give people who visit any Walt Disney Company Resort Hotel the non-reservation theme Parks time between say, 8:00AM & 10:00AM ans a way to say Thank You and to encourage everyone else to make their reservations to stay on property for future visits.

Another issue that leaves a bad taste for me and many of my friends who visit WDW Resort Hotels and Theme Parks numerous times per year is the Parkin lot fees charged to leave a vehicle per night at their hotel. Just another means of getting money from guests.

It sadden us to say we won’t be returning to your WOKE environment.

  2. Purchased Genie+ at 6.45 this morning with no problem rather than wait till midnight last night. Thanks for the fiddle fiddle tip Mollie. Picked up a Slinky Dog at 1 o’clock for 6.20 tonight while my kids were on Star Tours. That ride makes me ill Thanks Neil

  3. I just left 4 days at Disney. The lightning lanes were almost as long as some of the standby lines. So many people were complaining about it. Most of the standby lines were well over 2 hours and some were closer to 4 hours. I won’t be back to Disney for a long time, if ever. It’s gotten too expensive and you get less and less rides while you’re there. Also, last night was the extended night at MK. The lightning lanes aren’t valid for that so you’ll be lucky to get one ride during the extra magic hours. The magic is gone from Disney.

  4. We recently visited Disney World and used Genie+ for 8 family members. After purchasing, we found out we could not use it for certain rides, as we were not staying at a Disney property on this trip. Also, when we tried to book for all eight in our party, it sometimes would not include everyone in our party. By midday, there would be no times available for anything for the rest of the day. This was during a week that was less crowded at Disney, so we were disappointed paying $15 per person to get on 1 or 2 rides faster per day. Going through the process and trying to get through the day with young children was far more complicated than in the past and very frustrating. We waited in long lines for most of the popular rides anyway, if we wanted to include them. It is just too crowded any more, even during less popular weeks, to enjoy the Disney experience as we would like . After going many times to the parks, over several years, we will think about other experiences before attempting another frustrating and stressful trip to Disney.

  5. Wow. So now in order to use Genie + I have to stay up after midnight to get the service, then get up before 7 am to make sure I get reservations I want. This is supposed to be a vacation.

  6. We have used Genie+ for 2 trips now. Paying for it is not a problem. That was going to happen sooner or later. The problem is it should be available ahead of time and able to be purchased for the length of stay. Really if they had left “fastpass+” rules in place but started charging for it, that would have been fine. the problem with genie+ is too many rules, too many restrictions, and requires us to be on our phones instead of enjoying our vacation.

  7. I recently visited Disneyworld and wasn’t able to purchase Genie+ at midnight for some reason. I had to wait until 7am came around, select an available time for a lightning lane and then purchase Genie+, to clarify I wasn’t purchasing a fancy ride. Tried on an updated phone and iPad and this was the only way.

    1. It was my understanding that the ability to buy at midnight was just starting now, like this week.
