Why Disney World’s Moderate Resorts May Be the BEST Place to Stay

Deciding where to stay in Disney World is a difficult task no matter how high or low the budget. There are so many factors to consider, like size, location, transportation options, and (of course) price!

There are some beautiful Moderate resorts!

While many can agree that Disney’s Deluxe Resorts are pretty breathtaking, and Disney’s Value Resorts are super kid-friendly, we’re here today to make a case for Disney’s Moderate Resorts

What is a Moderate Resort?

The hotels at Disney World are categorized in relation to their size and price. For example, the Value Resorts are the least expensive, but typically offer the fewest extra amenities and smallest rooms.

The next level up is considered the Moderate Resort category, which (as the name implies) has hotels designed to fall between the Value and Deluxe categories.

What are my options?

The Moderate Resorts include:

Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

Each resort has its own unique theming and can range in size from massive and sprawling to cozy and small.

Keep in mind that some resorts have different transportation options that may factor into your decision. For example, you can access the Disney Skyliner from the Caribbean Beach Resort!

The Skyliner goes right over the resort!

You can also travel to Disney Springs via boat at Disney’s Port Orleans resorts.

Why should I stay at a Moderate Resort?

Moderate resort guests can enjoy many of the same benefits as Deluxe resort guests for way less money! For example, Early Theme Park Entry allows all Disney resort guests to visit the parks up to thirty minutes early every day of the week!

As an added perk for moderate resort guests, these resorts offer a variety of extra activities like fishing, bike riding, and more

You can rent bikes at Fort Wilderness!

Unlike the Value resorts, which only have one food court, there are multiple dining options at Disney’s moderate resorts. In fact, some of our favorite snacks and places to eat are located at moderate resorts, like the Dahlia Lounge and Scat Cat’s Lounge.

For those of you looking to spend a little time relaxing, there are some great pools to choose from, too!

If your family is hoping to rope-drop the Disney parks, staying at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort provides a big advantage to guests trying to be first in line. The Skyliner hub is located at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, so if you get in line early, you could be among the first guests to arrive at Disney’s Hollywood Studios or EPCOT!

Still not sure? Ask yourself this: do you plan on being in the Disney parks for most of your day, or would you like to relax at your resort for a while? If your hotel is only needed to serve one purpose (a place to sleep), then you really don’t need to spend extra money on a Deluxe Resort.

Ultimately, the decision on where to stay will vary from person to person — it’s a highly personal choice, after all! But we hope this information nudges you in the moderate direction because moderate resorts really are a great middle-of-the-road choice! 1. Port Orleans French Quarter is my favorite. It’s smaller and a bit isolated. The food court could use a lot of improvement, but otherwise, it’s a relaxing oasis.

  2. We stayed at Port Orleans French Quarter in May 2018 and loved it. We have been to WDW 6 times – about every 2-3 years and have always stayed at Deluxe otherwise.
POFQ has great theming (one of our musts) all over. The walkways and plazas have that New Orleans feel. The rooms (we had the 2 queens with 2 people) have beautiful and comfortable with landscaping all around. You felt like you were living in a neighborhood. We loved coming back in the evening and hearing the band playing in the lounge as we passed by.
The food court was okay – we could get breakfast if needed – but not my favorite, even though it had interesting decor.
All in all, it makes me want to try another moderate resort. Financially it might need to happen. But I haven’t stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge yet. So….we’ll see.

  3. I just wish the moderates were included in the extra evening hours with the deluxe resorts for what you pay. I understand value resorts not being included, but moderate resorts should be included.

    1. Deluxe costs an extra $300-600 per night. The demand for Disney is not down so on response to control crowds, Disney is now catering to the wealthier by increasing prices and increasing incentives to those that pay more money.
