Disney World hotel guests get a head start on booking Lightning Lanes compared to off-property guests, but is it really worth spending the extra money on lodging?

Off-property visitors can book Lightning Lanes 3 days in advance of park visit, while hotel guests can start booking 7 days before their check-in date. Do those extra days really matter? We’re here to break it down.
How You Can Maximize the Perk
First, to see if the perk is actually valuable, we’ve got to figure out how to maximize it. To show you how that works, let’s do an example where two different families are visiting Magic Kingdom on April 25th (it’s the perfect date, after all — shoutout my Miss Congeniality fans 😉).

Family A is resort guests. They’re staying at a Disney-owned hotel and can book their Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass selections (or purchase Lightning Lane Premier Pass) 7 days before their check-in day. The latest date their booking window would open is if they’re going to Magic Kingdom on the day they arrive and check in to their hotel. In that case, they could make Lightning Lanes on April 18th.

However, the absolute earliest their booking window could open would be April 4th. This would be the case if they were staying at their Disney Resort for two full weeks (the longest reservation you can make) and going to Magic Kingdom on their check-out day. This means that for Disney Resort guests going to the park on April 25th, your booking for Lightning Lanes would open sometime from April 4th to April 18th, depending entirely on the day you check in.

But what about Family B? They’re staying off of Disney World property and purchased their tickets standalone. If they have bought those tickets online ahead of time and their ticket’s start date is April 25th, their Lightning Lane booking window will open on April 22nd. This is 3 days before their park day in our example.

With this math, it’s possible that Disney Resort guests could get an 18-day head start on booking Lightning Lanes. That could change the availability massively.
Is There Really a Difference When Booking Earlier?
We’ve been tracking Lightning Lane data since the system premiered, and in short, YES, there’s a difference. Those staying at Disney World Resorts will get better availability when selecting Lightning Lane Multi Passes and Lightning Lane Single Passes than those staying off-site.

By the time the ticket holder’s 3-day window opens up, some of the most popular rides could already be completely booked for the day. We’ve seen this happen frequently, especially during busy travel seasons. Often, the availability of the mid-popularity rides is limited at that point as well. You might be stuck booking your Lightning Lanes for the afternoon and evening instead of earlier in the day.

The good news is that we often have luck finding availability for rides that have sold out the morning of our visit. If you couldn’t book something in advance, just make sure to start checking when you wake up that day (usually as early as 7AM) to see if more times are added or if someone changes their plans. This isn’t guaranteed, though, and you might end up with a less-than-desirable return time.

As the parks get more crowded, the early booking window for resort guests becomes more valuable. You’ll find more use in those extra days if you’re visiting the week after Christmas than you would on a random week in September. But if rides (and not waiting in long lines for them!) are the most important thing about your trip, then it may be worth the price to stay on Disney property.

Ultimately, it’s a decision that’s up to you and your family. If you choose to spend the money on Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Lightning Lane Single Pass, you probably want to get your money’s worth out of it by using it as many times as possible during the day. But sometimes, a park day isn’t all about how much you accomplish…it’s often more about spending time with your travel buddies!
