While mired in some controversy due to its offered experience, Spirit Airlines undoubtedly offers customers cheaper fares, and that makes it enticing to families looking to save some cash while traveling. As such, we’ve flown with this airline and have provided tips in the past. But now we’re warning you about rookie mistakes you should definitely avoid when traveling with Spirit.

We’re letting you know in advance about 5 rookie mistakes that could destroy your Spirit Airlines experience so that you can have the best experience possible.

Not Understanding The Quality You’re Signing Up For

Spirit Airlines is going to save you a lot of cash compared to its pricier competitors, but it’ll short you on amenities.

Shorter legroom, diminished comfort, iffy customer service, no in-flight entertainment, and no complimentary snacks and beverages will be offered to you. If you are used to bougier flying experiences, throw all that out the window.

You’ll need to watch content already pre-downloaded on your devices or read material you brought. We definitely recommend bringing portable batteries for your devices. Additionally, pack your own drinks and snacks — even for long flights — or be ready to shell out extra cash during the flight.

Not Reading The Fine Print

Spirit has a reputation for demanding a ton of hidden fees. That includes an extra carry-on fee.

Carry-ons are more expensive than checking luggage, and if you don’t pay your carry-on fee until your arrival, the price goes up significantly. The same can be said for checked bags. While you’ll be paying no matter what for checked luggage, carry-on fees can be negated if your item is smaller than 18” x 14” x 8”. This size requirement is strictly enforced — you will not skate by if you’re slightly over. Be sure to consult their official rules online before you even start packing.

Not Selecting Your Seats When Booking

We’re not gonna sugarcoat it — flying with Spirit can be uncomfortable due to cost-cutting like smaller tray tables and seats. With that in mind, it’s not a bad idea to spend a little extra for an aisle seat or your preferred seating so you aren’t sandwiched between strangers.

If you don’t mind the extra fee, booking your seat ahead of time gives you a lot of autonomy when it comes to your flight comfort and far less opportunity for regret.

Not Printing Your Boarding Pass Before You Get To The Airport

Believe it or not, Spirit will charge you an additional fee to print your boarding pass at the airport!

It’ll cost you $2 per boarding pass at an airport kiosk and $10 per boarding pass at the desk. Save yourself the extra costs and print them at home.

Trying To Have Flight Flexibility

Flight delays and cancellations are especially a risk with Spirit, and getting refunds or rebookings can be tricky.

Reservation changes can incur additional fees, and Spirit offers a Cancel For Any Reason fee that is only available for cancellations made online up to 24 hours before the scheduled departure of the first flight on the reservation.

Additionally, rebooking can be an issue and potentially set you back days, so it’s best to come up with some alternative plans should disaster strike.
