The ONE Thing We Make Every First-Timer Do at Disney World

You only get one first trip to Disney World.

Cinderella Castle!

You can go a dozen more times after that, but nothing hits quite like the first time walking down Main Street, grabbing a Mickey-shaped snack, or hearing that first “welcome home.” That’s why we’ve got a running list of things we insist our friends and family do when they visit for the first time — no excuses, no shame, no skipping. Even if we don’t personally do all of them anymore, we believe everyone’s gotta try them at least once. Here’s what makes our First-Timer Must-Do list — and yes, we will lightly bully you into doing every single one.

Ride the Classics (Yes, Even That One)

We know. You’re coming in hot with a long to-do list and big thrill ride energy, and we’re over here like, “Get in line for ‘it’s a small world.’” But hear us out: This is your first time. The classics are called classics for a reason.

“it’s a small world”

Whether it’s the gentle spins of Dumbo, the chaos of Mad Tea Party, or the strange retro charm of Carousel of Progress, you have to do at least one of them. These are the rides that scream “Disney” in the most nostalgic way, and you’ll never forget the first time you float through that room full of singing dolls.

Eat the Iconic Snacks

We don’t care if you’re full. You’re getting a Dole Whip. You’re eating a Mickey Waffle. And you’re absolutely trying a Mickey Bar, even if it’s just a bite of someone else’s. These are non-negotiable.

Dole Whip

Part of the Disney experience is giving in to the snack culture—it’s fun, it’s delicious, and it’s surprisingly sentimental. You’ll remember sitting on a curb at Magic Kingdom, sticky fingers and all, taking that first bite of frozen chocolate-covered Mickey-shaped happiness.

Hug Mickey (Or at Least a Character)

You might think character meet-and-greets are only for kids, but we’re here to tell you they are absolutely for everyone. Hugging Mickey is a rite of passage. And if a hug’s not your thing? Go for a fist bump or a photo.

Meeting Mickey

The real win is seeing the characters up close and watching the magic click into place. We recommend at least one character interaction on your first trip—bonus points if you do a full character meal. It’s not just about the food (though Mickey waffles at breakfast never miss); it’s the vibe. The characters come right to your table and it’s way less chaotic than waiting in a long line.

Watch the Fireworks. All the Way Through.

We know the crowds are rough. We know the standing around can feel endless. But the nighttime fireworks shows? Worth it.

Magic Kingdom fireworks

There’s something incredibly Disney about being in the middle of the crowd, looking up at the sky, and watching Tinker Bell literally fly across the castle. Even if you’re not a “show” person, this is one of those bucket list moments. The soundtrack, the projections, the fireworks—it all hits harder than you’d expect. And while we might skip it on return visits, we always tell first-timers to make time for it.

Ride the PeopleMover

It doesn’t go fast. It doesn’t have drops. And it’s easy to overlook. But the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover is one of our favorite first-timer picks. Why? Because it’s a calm, quiet break from the chaos that still gives you an awesome overview of Magic Kingdom.

PeopleMover

You cruise past ride scenes, peek into Space Mountain, and get this peaceful little tour of the park from above. There’s nothing else like it in any other U.S. Disney park, and honestly, it’s one of the few things that still feels untouched by time.

Watch Fantasmic (We Mean It)

We are firm about this one. Fantasmic is a must. Yes, it’s a bit of a walk to get to the amphitheater in Hollywood Studios. Yes, it can be a little chaotic getting out. But trust us—it’s worth it.

Fantasmic!

The dragon, the music, the Mickey of it all—it’s one of those shows that just captures the old-school magic in the best way. We tell people to do it once, and almost every time, they come back and say it was one of the highlights of the trip.

Get to Know Walt (Just a Little)

This one’s low-key and optional if you’re in a rush, but we still recommend it: Walt Disney Presents: One Man’s Dream at Hollywood Studios.

One Man’s Dream inside Walt Disney Presents

It’s a quiet little walk-through exhibit that shows how Walt Disney got everything started. There’s a model of the parks, historic photos, and even some old concept art. It doesn’t take long, and even if you’re not a Disney history buff, it’s worth seeing the origin story behind the whole empire you’re now immersed in.

Your first Disney trip is going to be a whirlwind, but making time for these things gives you a foundation that every other trip builds on. You don’t have to do them all again (we usually skip some on repeat visits), but we’ll always stand by our First-Timer Must-Dos.
