3 Scams First Timers Keep Falling For in Disney World

Disney World is supposed to be magical, not scammy.

Magic Kingdom

But even in the Most Magical Place on Earth, there are still a few not-so-magical things that first-time visitors fall for — because let’s be real, navigating Disney World is already overwhelming without having to worry about someone trying to steal your info or money. Whether it’s in your hotel room, at the gas pump, or even on your phone, some of these scams are surprisingly easy to fall for if you don’t know what to look out for. Here are three scams (plus one extra) we still see people get caught in at Disney World — and how to avoid becoming the next victim.

Toll Road Text Scam

Let’s start with something that can hit you before you even get to the parks. Florida has a lot of toll roads, especially around the Orlando area, and if you’re renting a car, it’s normal to be a little confused about how the toll system works. But what’s not normal is getting a random text saying you didn’t pay a toll and need to click a link to settle it. Nope. Hard pass.

These texts might look super official and even use your license plate or reference Florida’s tolling system, but they’re total scams — what’s known as “smishing” (SMS phishing). Do not click the link. Do not respond. If you’re truly worried about unpaid tolls, go directly through the Florida Turnpike Enterprise website (and check with your rental car company), not some sketchy link from a random number.

The Fake Front Desk Phone Call

You’re finally back in your hotel room after a long day in the parks. Your feet hurt, your kid is melting down over a Mickey bar, and the phone rings. The “front desk” says there’s an issue with your credit card on file, and they need you to confirm your number again to keep your reservation from being canceled. STOP. Hang up.

The hotel room phone

Even though the call may sound convincing — and it might even come through your hotel room’s landline — it’s not the real front desk. This scam has been making its rounds for years. Scammers somehow get access to guest room numbers and pretend to be hotel staff. Real hotel front desks will not ask for your credit card information over the phone.

Front Desk at Disney’s Contemporary Resort

If you’re ever unsure, walk down to the front desk and ask in person. And if you do get a suspicious call like this, report it to the hotel staff immediately.

The Pizza Flyer Scam

Let’s set the scene: You’re exhausted, it’s late, and the idea of pizza magically appearing at your hotel room door sounds perfect. Then you spot a flyer that’s been shoved under your door. It’s for a local pizza place with what looks like a good deal. Easy, right? Wrong. Total scam.

Pizza

These flyers are not from real businesses. They’re from scammers hoping to get your credit card info when you call and try to order. You might not get any pizza, but you could get a nice surprise on your bank statement later. If you’re craving pizza, stick to hotel quick service spots. Many Disney resorts offer their own pizza delivery, and for the ones that don’t, you can use Mobile Order to grab something fresh and hot without the risk of fraud.

Third-Party Hotel Booking Sites

This one is sneaky because it looks legit — until it’s not. There are a ton of websites out there offering Disney hotel deals, but not all of them are on the up and up. We’ve seen some straight-up scammy sites pay to appear at the top of search results when you Google specific hotels. They mimic the look of real sites, take your payment info, and then… disappear. No room, no refund, no help.

Disney’s Port Orleans — Riverside Resort

Even when the third-party site is technically real, you’re often trading flexibility for price. Disney’s own booking policies are usually more generous when it comes to changes and cancellations. Our advice? Doubt all deals. Check the URL. Look up the business on the Better Business Bureau. Or, skip the stress and book directly through Disney’s official website.

Caribbean Beach Resort

So if you’re a Disney World first-timer, or even if you’ve been a few times and just haven’t run into these yet, consider this your heads-up. Disney is full of magic, but it’s still in the real world—and unfortunately, that means scammers are real, too.
