4 New Scams and Fees to Watch Out for When Driving to Disney World

Driving to Disney World? Buckle up—your wallet might be in for a bumpy ride.

Welcome to Walt Disney World!

There are a few lesser-known scams and fees popping up lately that could seriously mess with your trip before you even see Cinderella Castle. From shady toll tactics to unexpected charges at the gas pump, it’s getting trickier out there for drivers heading to the Most Magical Place on Earth. Let’s break down what to look out for so you don’t fall for any of these on your next road trip.

Toll Road Scams

If you’re hitting the road to Disney, chances are you’re driving on one of Florida’s many toll roads. If you already have something like SunPass, your tolls will just get charged to your account as usual. But if you don’t have an account? That’s where things can get weird.

The toll system will snap a pic of your license plate, check your registration address, and mail you a bill. Totally normal. What’s not normal? Scam texts pretending to be from toll services like SunPass, claiming you owe money. These are called “smishing” scams (SMS + phishing) and they’re out to steal your info. I personally got two of these during my last trip, and yeah—my heart definitely dropped for a second.

The texts usually sound urgent and scary—like you’ll be fined even more if you don’t pay ASAP. But don’t fall for it. I knew my SunPass account was set to auto-reload, so I logged in directly (not through any link in the text) and confirmed everything was fine. Sure enough, total scam.

Here’s how to protect yourself:

    • Don’t click links in unsolicited texts, even if they look official.
    • If you’re unsure, go directly to the company’s real website and check your account.
    • You can also forward the text to 7726 (SPAM), report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, and block the number.
    • And just delete it—don’t even engage.

Toll Road Fees

You might remember Florida’s Toll Relief Program that gave drivers 50% off tolls if they made enough trips in a month. It saved frequent drivers hundreds of dollars a year. Well, that’s gone now.

The program ended and there’s no sign it’s coming back. Florida has over 700 miles of toll roads and plans to expand, so don’t expect those prices to drop anytime soon. One driver said he paid $1,000 in tolls now that the relief program is gone—and he’s not alone.

If you’re visiting Disney and driving around Central Florida, keep an eye on how quickly those tolls add up. Budget accordingly, and maybe map out a toll-free route (if you’ve got time and patience).

Rental Car Damage Scams

If you’re renting a car for your Disney trip, this one’s for you. Some rental companies have been known to charge for “damage” that wasn’t your fault—or that wasn’t even real.

And we’re off!

Avoid this headache with a few quick steps:

    • Take detailed photos of the car (inside and out) before you drive off the lot and again when you return it.
    • Walk through the inspection with a rep and point out anything that looks off.
    • Use a credit card with rental insurance coverage, or buy insurance through the rental company for extra peace of mind.

Proof is your best friend here. Don’t return the car without it.

Gas Pump Skimming

Another sneaky scam that can hit you on the way to Disney? Gas pump skimming. Criminals place hidden devices on card readers to steal your payment info when you swipe.

Here’s how to avoid it:

  • Try to pay with cash if you’re at a random or low-traffic station.
  • Better yet, prepay inside or use tap-to-pay options like Apple Pay or Google Wallet—they’re harder to hack.
  • Give the card reader a quick tug—if it feels loose or looks weird, don’t use it.

Skimming can happen anywhere, but isolated gas stations are higher risk. Just stay alert.

That’s the rundown, folks. Driving to Disney should be exciting, not stressful, but these scams and fees are real and can sneak up fast if you’re not careful. Take a few minutes to prep before your trip, and you’ll save yourself some major headaches (and money) later.
