5 Unspoken Rules Disney World Cast Members Always Follow

We’re gonna let you in on a little secret: Disney World Cast Members have a LOT of rules to follow. Disney is pretty strict about the way its Cast Members speak, act, and even stand — it’s all about putting our best foot forward and following the story!

But in addition to some of those official rules, like “No leaning” and “No hands in your pockets,” Cast Members have a few unspoken rules of their own. Let’s talk about them!

OK, so you won’t find these rules in any Cast Member handbooks, but there are some rules Cast Members collectively follow in the parks, even if there’s no one around to enforce them.

1. If you see a child behaving well, give them a little extra attention.

This isn’t rocket science. Cute kids, well-behaved children, and little ones who look like they need a little extra attention are some of the Cast Member’s favorite people to interact with in the parks and resorts.

There’s no better feeling than seeing a child’s face light up with joy and excitement. Even if it’s something as simple as handing out a sticker or giving someone a cotton candy sample, those little actions go a long way. Disney may not explicitly tell its Cast Members to be extra nice to kids, but it’s an unspoken rule that we’re there to make magic for families.

2. We’re each other’s eyes and ears.

In a way, Cast Members are like a network of SPIES! OK, that’s probably an exaggeration, but Cast Members know to keep their eyes and ears out for bad behavior and alert others if something might be going down.

Most Disney World Cast Members know to give each other a heads-up about any ongoing situations that may arise. We don’t want any of our coworkers to be left in the dark, after all!

3. Guests love insider info!

Cast Members may know a little more about character meet-and-greets or upcoming shows than other guests, so every so often, it’s nice to pass along some helpful information to friendly guests!

Jack and Sally in EPCOT!

Maybe there’s a secret character meet-and-greet going on in EPCOT or a Hollywood Studios show starting in 5 minutes. If you see a family that looks like they could use some good news, it’s pretty fun to brighten someone’s day!

4. Mickey belongs EVERYWHERE!

Sorting sugar packets? Make them into a Mickey head! Sweeping leaves? Make a Mickey-shaped pile! Whenever possible, Disney World Cast Members find themselves making their own hidden Mickeys.

We LOVE finding these!

Why? It’s fun! And people love it. (Us included.)

5. If there’s no official story, it’s up to us to make one!

You wouldn’t believe how many random questions Cast Members get in a day.

Festival of Fantasy Parade

Sometimes, Cast Members have to get creative on the spot when asked a truly off-the-wall question about Disney park operations. It’s not very magical to tell people the honest answer, so it’s become an unspoken rule that sometimes, lying is okay. Shhh! Don’t tell anyone.

Cast Members are in charge of making magic — it’s not easy! That’s why some of these unspoken rules were created, though; we all need a few rules to help keep us sane, right? In the meantime, we’re always on the lookout for the latest Disney news, so stay tuned for more.
