Cantina de San Angel Refurbishment Underway

As reported in the AllEars January 12th “News Around The World” section the Cantina de San Angel in the Mexico pavilion is closed and undergoing refurbishment. In case you missed that bit of news I’m repeating it for you here:

“Cantina de San Angel at the Mexico pavilion in Epcot, has closed for a significant refurbishment and expansion until fall 2010 (reopening is tentatively set for late September, but could change). The company that operates the restaurants in the Mexico pavilion, San Angel Inn, LLC, plans to open on the site a new 400-seat waterside restaurant and quick service food location “specializing in the freshly baked culinary flavors of Mexico.” During the refurbishment, the San Angel Inn Restaurante and La Cava de Tequila, located inside the Mexico pavilion, and the Taqueria Del Lago, located alongside the promenade, will still be open for Mexican dining.”

The refurbishment is now underway. They have put up a very large mural screen that wraps all around the cantina to hide the construction. Here are some pictures of what it looks like:

  1. I hope the new “cantina” will be open enough to get the great views of Illuminations. It has always been mt favorite place to view the show

DizneyMike replies; Sharon, I don’t know for sure, but my guess is that there will still be great Illuminations viewing there. I can’t imagine Disney blocking that area off. But that’s only a guess….Mike

  2. Hello Mike, We always enjoy your info and pictures. We are going this year in Dec. first time to see everything Disney at Christmas can’t wait. We always stop to eat at Cantina de San Angel and wondered if you knew if it was being turned into a sit down restaurant or just as befor walk up and eat out side? Hope it is open when we go so we can try it out. Keep writting it brings a smile to our faces hear in cold Cape Cod MA. Thank you for a job well done.

DizneyMike replies: Mary Beth & David, always great to hear from fellow New Englanders! (Even though I’m living in Florida now I still consider myself a New Englander having lived in MA all my life.) According the the press release it’s going to be a “new 400-seat waterside restaurant and quick service food location” The word “and” makes it sounds like it will be both full service and quick service. It should be open by the time you’re down here so you’ll get to try it out. You’re going to love Disney at Christmas time! Thanks for the great comment….Mike
