Spaceship Earth is located just beyond EPCOT’s main entrance. Which means, yes, you will see it immediately. That also means a surprising number of people instinctively get into line the second they enter the park. We’ll talk about why you might not want to follow them in a minute.

The Ride Experience

Spaceship Earth takes guests on a journey through the development of human communication, beginning thousands of years ago and eventually reaching the computer age. You board continuously moving “time vehicles” before beginning a slow climb through the interior of the geodesic sphere. The attraction uses elaborate sets, Audio-Animatronics figures, narration, music, lighting, and some very specific smells to walk through pivotal moments in human history.

There’s no thrill-ride component here. No drops. No launch. No spinning. Nobody is going to suddenly fire you backward through ancient Rome at 60 MPH. This is classic EPCOT storytelling at a very civilized pace.

What You’ll See

The current version of Spaceship Earth follows the history of communication and human innovation from prehistoric times into the modern age. The attraction begins with early humans communicating through cave paintings before moving through several major periods of history.

Scenes include:

• Ancient Egypt and the development of papyrus
• Phoenician merchants and the spread of the alphabet
• Ancient Greece
• Ancient Rome
• The preservation of knowledge during the Middle Ages
• The Islamic Golden Age

• The expansion of newspapers and mass communication

• The development of computers

Dame Judi Dench narrates the current journey while a score by composer Bruce Broughton shifts instruments and musical styles to match the historical periods you’re moving through. And then there’s Rome.

If you’ve ridden Spaceship Earth before, you probably already know exactly what we’re talking about. The burning-Rome scene has one of the most recognizable smells at Walt Disney World. You could blindfold some longtime EPCOT fans, pipe that scent into the room, and they’d start thanking the Phoenicians on instinct.

The Starfield

Eventually, your time vehicle reaches the upper portion of Spaceship Earth and enters a dark starfield. This is one of the attraction’s quieter and more atmospheric moments, with a view of Earth appearing against the stars before your vehicle begins its descent.

And this is where the ride gets slightly unusual. Your vehicle rotates around and travels backward for much of the return trip toward ground level. You’re still moving slowly, but guests who dislike backward motion should know about it before boarding.

Design Your Future

During the descent, the attraction shifts from looking backward at human history to asking what your own future might look like. A touchscreen inside your ride vehicle asks a series of questions about your interests and preferences.

You’ll choose things related to areas such as:

Spaceship Earth then uses your answers, along with the photo taken near the beginning of the attraction, to create a personalized animated vision of your future.  Is the technology cutting-edge by today’s standards? Not particularly. Is watching your own floating head star in a cartoon about futuristic transportation still weirdly delightful? Absolutely.

Project Tomorrow

Your Spaceship Earth experience doesn’t necessarily end when you step out of the ride vehicle. The post-show area is called Project Tomorrow: Inventing the Wonders of the Future.

This interactive space explores technology, science, medicine, transportation, and other ideas about the future. Experiences can include interactive games and demonstrations involving:

• Transportation and driving systems
• Digital technology
• Your personalized Spaceship Earth future

You can also view the future video created during your ride. Project Tomorrow is easy to walk directly through on your way out, but families with kids who enjoy interactive exhibits may want to budget a little extra time here.

Lightning Lane

Spaceship Earth is currently included as an eligible attraction with Lightning Lane Multi Pass. It is not currently a Lightning Lane Single Pass attraction.

Guests using Lightning Lane Multi Pass may be able to select Spaceship Earth in advance or later in the day, depending on current availability and Disney’s Lightning Lane rules.

Spaceship Earth may also be included among eligible attractions with Lightning Lane Premier Pass. Lightning Lane offerings, groupings, and availability can change, so check the My Disney Experience app for the current lineup on your park day.

Do You Need Lightning Lane for Spaceship Earth?

Not necessarily. Spaceship Earth uses a continuously moving Omnimover ride system, so the standby queue can load guests fairly efficiently when the attraction is operating normally. Waits can build, especially at certain points during the morning, but this is often an attraction where patience can save you a Lightning Lane selection. Which brings us to one of our favorite EPCOT tricks.

AllEars Touring Tips

Do not automatically ride Spaceship Earth first.

We understand the impulse. You enter EPCOT. Spaceship Earth is right there. It’s enormous. It’s beautiful. It’s practically saying, “Hello, would you like to get into this line?” Meanwhile, thousands of other people have had exactly the same thought.

If Spaceship Earth has a longer wait when you arrive, keep walking. Head toward one of EPCOT’s more competitive attractions and come back later when the entrance rush has spread deeper into the park.

Check the wait again in the afternoon. Spaceship Earth can become a much easier attraction to fit into your day once the morning crowd has moved toward World Discovery, World Nature, and World Showcase.

Remember how long the ride is. Sixteen minutes is substantial by Disney dark-ride standards. If you have a dining reservation or another timed plan approaching, don’t judge this solely by the posted wait.

Don’t skip it just because it’s old. Spaceship Earth isn’t flashy, but it is one of the attractions that explains what EPCOT was originally built to do. It’s curious. It’s optimistic. It’s a little strange. It asks you to think about where we’ve been and where we’re going. Also, it has Rome smell.

If you’ve never ridden it, experience the current version before the reimagining. Disney has officially announced major changes to the attraction, although it hasn’t yet announced when the current version will close. There will be another Spaceship Earth. This particular Spaceship Earth now has an expiration date. We just don’t know what that date is yet.

Is Spaceship Earth Good for Kids?

Spaceship Earth has no height requirement and can be experienced by guests of all ages. For many families, it’s a welcome break from EPCOT’s more intense attractions. The ride is slow and gentle, and there aren’t any sudden drops or thrill elements.

That said, younger children who dislike darkness may be hesitant in a few areas. The attraction spends substantial time in low lighting or complete darkness, and some historic scenes can look dramatic to very young guests.

The backward descent is also worth mentioning before you ride if your child tends to be nervous about unfamiliar movement. Otherwise, this can be a nice attraction for mixed-age groups because everyone from a toddler to Grandma can ride together.

Motion, Darkness, and Scare Factor

Spaceship Earth has a low motion level. The ride vehicles move slowly and continuously along the track. There are no traditional drops, high speeds, spinning sections, or sudden acceleration.

However, there are a few things sensitive guests should know:

• Much of the attraction is dark.
• The vehicle travels backward during much of the descent.
• The ride includes audio effects and Audio-Animatronics figures.
• The continuous ride system may occasionally pause temporarily.

Temporary stops are normal on Omnimover attractions and can occur for a variety of operational reasons, including assisting guests during loading and unloading. If you’re prone to motion sickness, Spaceship Earth is generally one of EPCOT’s gentler attractions, although prolonged backward motion can bother some guests.

Accessibility

Spaceship Earth has specific transfer requirements for guests using wheelchairs or ECVs. Guests using an ECV or wheelchair should speak with a Cast Member at the attraction entrance for current boarding instructions and accommodations.

Disney currently identifies the attraction as requiring guests to transfer to a wheelchair and then transfer into the ride vehicle. Guests who need assistance with accessibility should confirm current procedures with Disney or a Cast Member before joining the queue. Guests with service animals should also check with a Cast Member for attraction-specific boarding information.

Accessibility procedures can change, so Disney’s current attraction information should always take priority over older planning guides.

GEO-82

There’s now another reason to spend time around Spaceship Earth, although this one is strictly for the grown-ups. GEO-82 is an adults-only lounge located within the Spaceship Earth complex. The lounge is inspired by the architecture and history of EPCOT’s iconic geodesic sphere, with metallic finishes, geometric details, and expansive views toward World Celebration Gardens and World Showcase Lagoon.

GEO-82 serves cocktails, wine, beer, and globally inspired small plates. The lounge is reserved for guests ages 21 and older, and Advance Dining Reservations are strongly recommended when available.

There is also a separately priced fireworks experience that pairs food and drinks with views of EPCOT’s nighttime spectacular.

This is, admittedly, a very different way to appreciate Spaceship Earth than learning about Gutenberg. One involves the history of communication. The other may involve a Brown Butter Old Fashioned.

What’s Next for Spaceship Earth?

Spaceship Earth is officially getting a major reimagining. Disney announced the project on August 15th, 2026 during the Horizons: A Carousel of Progress Disney Experiences Showcase at D23. This will be the attraction’s first major update in nearly two decades.

A New Focus on Human Connection

The current Spaceship Earth primarily follows the development of human communication. Disney says the reimagined attraction will broaden that concept and instead explore human connection.

The new story is expected to bring Spaceship Earth into the internet age and beyond while maintaining the optimism and forward-looking spirit that has defined the attraction.

Disney is not describing this as abandoning Spaceship Earth’s classic ideas in favor of an unrelated movie franchise. So far, Disney is framing this as an evolution of the attraction’s existing story.

The Internet Age and Beyond

One of the biggest limitations of the current version is fairly obvious. A ride about human communication now reaches its technological climax before many of the things shaping modern communication even existed.

Disney has specifically said that the reimagined version will bring the attraction into the internet age and beyond. Exactly how Disney plans to portray the internet, social media, smartphones, artificial intelligence, or whatever comes next has not yet been revealed. And we think “the history of the group chat” probably needs a few Imagineering meetings before anyone starts building Audio-Animatronics.

What Will Stay?

Disney has not yet provided a scene-by-scene breakdown of the reimagined attraction. We do not know which current scenes will remain, which will be updated, or which may disappear entirely.

Disney also has not announced:

• A closing date for the current attraction
• An opening date for the new version
• A new narrator
• A new musical score
• Major ride-system changes
• A complete list of new scenes
• What will happen to the current interactive finale
• Whether Project Tomorrow will also change

Those are all details we’re waiting to learn.

Is This the Same Spaceship Earth Refurbishment Disney Announced Years Ago?

No, or at least Disney is describing this as a new direction. Disney previously announced a different major Spaceship Earth refurbishment that was supposed to begin in 2020. That version would have included new narration, different scenes, and a glowing “story light” guiding guests through the attraction.

The project was postponed during the major Walt Disney World closures of 2020 and never moved forward as originally announced. Disney remained largely quiet about a major Spaceship Earth overhaul for years. Then, at D23 2026, Disney announced this new reimagining centered on human connection.

So if you stumble across old concept art involving a glowing story light, don’t assume that’s what Disney is currently building.

Spaceship Earth History

Spaceship Earth opened with EPCOT Center on October 1st, 1982. While the basic idea has remained remarkably consistent, the attraction has gone through several significant versions during its lifetime.

The Original Version

The opening-day attraction told the story of communication from prehistoric humans into the future. Actor Lawrence Dobkin served as the original narrator.

Walter Cronkite

In 1986, legendary journalist Walter Cronkite became the attraction’s second narrator. This version is especially remembered by longtime EPCOT fans for the song “Tomorrow’s Child.”

Jeremy Irons

A major refurbishment in the 1990s introduced another version of Spaceship Earth with Jeremy Irons as narrator. The attraction’s finale and several scenes were changed during this era.

Judi Dench

The current version debuted following a major refurbishment in 2007 and 2008. Dame Judi Dench became the attraction’s fourth narrator, and composer Bruce Broughton created the musical score.

The attraction also introduced the interactive touchscreen finale that lets riders design their own future. That means the upcoming reimagining announced at D23 will begin the fifth major era of Spaceship Earth.

Why Doesn’t Rain Pour Off Spaceship Earth?

The exterior of Spaceship Earth was engineered with a sophisticated drainage system. Rainwater is collected through channels in the structure rather than simply cascading off the enormous sphere and onto everyone standing underneath it. This is one of those clever bits of Imagineering you don’t particularly appreciate until you’re standing under Spaceship Earth during a Florida downpour.

Was Spaceship Earth Ever Covered by a Giant Mickey Hand?

Yes. For EPCOT’s Millennium Celebration, Disney added an enormous Mickey Mouse hand and “2000” sign above Spaceship Earth. After the Millennium Celebration, the numbers were replaced with the word “Epcot.”

The giant wand structure remained beside Spaceship Earth for several years before Disney ultimately removed it. People had opinions. People still have opinions. EPCOT fans can maintain an argument for decades with remarkably little outside assistance.
