The Orlando International Airport (MCO) is massive, crowded, and full of traps for unsuspecting tourists, especially if you’re coming in hot for a Disney World trip.

Between the confusing terminals, unpredictable security lines, and sneaky souvenir stands, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed before your vacation even starts. But I’ve been through it, made the mistakes, and learned the hard way—so here are seven things I really wish I’d known before flying into MCO.
If you’re looking for a travel agent to help with your vacation, we recommend our friends at Mouse Fan Travel. They’re experts in the field with over 20 years of vacation planning experience, and they can help take a bunch of the stress out of the entire booking process for you!
Download the MCO App Before You Land
Look, I’m not here to tell you to download another app just for fun. But this one? It’s worth it.

The MCO app gives you real-time updates on security wait times, gate locations, food options, and even parking status. Whether you’re figuring out where to grab your bags or checking which tram to hop on, this app is your new best friend. It’s especially clutch when you’re heading back home and running on three hours of sleep and a Mickey pretzel. If you don’t want to download it, there are interactive signs and kiosks around, but the app saves you a lot of wandering and guessing.
Don’t Buy the First Souvenir You See
I get it — you just walked off the plane and BAM! There’s a Disney Store. It’s got ears, tees, plushies, and the air smells like nostalgia. But slow your roll.

The airport Disney Store is cute, but the selection inside the parks is so much better. Unless you’re panic-buying a gift you forgot to grab during your trip, wait until you’re actually on Disney property (or wait to do your final souvenir shopping before you get back to the airport). The same rule applies to the Universal store and random Orlando merch booths. You’ll have better options, better prices, and better memories if you hold off.
Compare Uber and Lyft Prices — Always
Rideshare is one of the fastest ways to get from MCO to Disney World, but prices can be wildly inconsistent depending on time of day, flight volume, and which app you’re using.

Before you just hit “Request Ride” out of habit, take 30 seconds to compare both apps. I’ve seen $20 differences between Uber and Lyft at the same exact time.

Also, if you’re traveling with kids and need a car seat, that can limit your options and jack up the price. Pro tip: if you’re in a group, splitting the fare can actually make a standard rideshare cheaper than Mears or Brightline.
Pre-Schedule Your Ride to the Airport
This is one of those things that sounds obvious until you’re in a panic at 5:30 AM with zero drivers in sight and a flight boarding in 90 minutes.

MCO gets crazy busy during peak departure times — especially in the mornings or after big Disney events. Pre-scheduling your rideshare (which you can do on both Uber and Lyft) guarantees you have a car when you need it. It’s also usually cheaper since you’re locking in a rate before surge pricing kicks in. I learned this the hard way and will never wing it again.
Follow the 3-2-1 Rule
If you remember one thing from this post, let it be this: MCO is not the airport to cut it close.
Here’s the golden rule:
- Arrive at the airport 3 hours before your flight
- Be through security 2 hours before
- Be at your gate 1 hour before

This might feel extreme, especially if you’re used to smaller airports, but MCO is busy on a Tuesday at 10 AM in February. Add in long bag check lines, unclear signage, and the occasional gate change, and suddenly you’re running in flip-flops and sweating through your Spirit Jersey. Also, MCO has multiple terminals and gate areas — you don’t want to end up on the wrong side of the airport with 15 minutes to spare.
Skip the Long TSA Line—For Free
Not a TSA PreCheck or CLEAR member? You can still save yourself from the regular line that looks like Space Mountain during a holiday weekend.

MCO Reserve is a free service that lets you schedule a TSA security appointment ahead of time. You’ll get a time slot, a designated checkpoint, and a much calmer experience. It’s available from 5 AM to 5 PM for flights departing between 6:30 AM and 8:30 PM. All you have to do is go to mco.clearme.com, book your slot, and walk up like you own the place. (But don’t actually be rude — this is still airport security.)
Use Mobile Order to Skip Airport Food Lines
Yes, you can mobile order airport Chick-fil-A. No, I’m not joking.

With the Grab app, you can place a mobile order at select restaurants inside MCO — including Chick-fil-A, Einstein Bros., Camden Food Co., and more. It’s basically Mobile Order for the airport, and it’s a game-changer when your stomach is growling but the line is a million people deep. You can also use the Starbucks app at any airport Starbucks, including the one in MCO.

So yeah, MCO might not technically be a theme park, but it has all the same chaos — lines, crowds, and surprising twists included. Hopefully, these tips will help you dodge the worst of it and kick off (or end) your Disney trip on a smoother note.
