Some of the most common Disney World hotel tips are quietly working against you right now.

The parks, resorts, and transportation systems are constantly evolving, and advice that worked even a year ago can lead to real frustrations today. If you’re planning a trip in the current wave of construction and changes, it’s time to rethink a few habits. Here are the outdated hotel strategies you’ll want to leave behind before your next stay.
Booking the Same Resort You Always Book Without Checking Construction
Loyalty to a favorite resort is a real thing, and there’s nothing wrong with having a go-to. But right now, Walt Disney World has an unusual amount of active construction happening across multiple properties, and it can seriously affect your stay in ways that aren’t always obvious upfront.

The bigger issue isn’t just noise or a blocked pool view. Construction near or around certain resorts can impact transportation routes, bus stops, boat docks, and even monorail service. If your usual resort is in the middle of a construction zone, the transportation you’re counting on might be rerouted, delayed, or temporarily unavailable. Always check the current construction status of any resort before you book, not after you arrive.
Defaulting to a Monorail Resort When Magic Kingdom Isn’t Your Priority
The monorail resorts, Grand Floridian, Polynesian, and Contemporary, have an iconic status that’s hard to argue with. The convenience of stepping onto the monorail and gliding into Magic Kingdom is genuinely one of the best experiences at Disney World. But that perk only makes sense if Magic Kingdom is where you’re spending most of your time.

If you’re planning to split your days between all four parks, or if EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, or Animal Kingdom are higher on your list, you could actually be making your trip harder. Staying at a monorail resort and trying to get to EPCOT or Hollywood Studios every day means extra bus time or longer travel routes.

The EPCOT area resorts like BoardWalk, Beach Club, and Yacht Club put you within walking distance of EPCOT’s International Gateway and a short walk or boat ride from Hollywood Studios. The Skyliner resorts, including Caribbean Beach and Riviera, offer direct gondola access to both EPCOT and Hollywood Studios. That kind of convenience is worth more than a monorail you’re barely using.

Think about where you actually want to be, and then pick your home base around that instead of picking it out of habit.
Thinking You Need Lightning Lanes Every Single Day
Lightning Lane has become such a fixture of Disney World trip planning that a lot of people treat it as mandatory, booking it before they’ve even figured out their park days. But the truth is, you can have a genuinely great Disney World vacation without purchasing Lightning Lane access at all.

Rope drop is still one of the most effective strategies at any park. Arriving at opening and heading straight to the most popular attractions gets you on rides with minimal wait times, often before the bulk of the crowd has finished breakfast.
Parades, shows, character meets, and resort hopping are all free and fill a day faster than you’d expect. Lightning Lane can be a useful tool on certain days, but it’s not the difference between a good trip and a bad one. Skipping it saves real money and removes a layer of planning stress that can take the fun out of the whole experience.
Assuming ‘Ohana Is the Best Meal on Property
‘Ohana has earned its reputation. The all-you-can-eat family-style setup, the Polynesian setting, and the nostalgia factor make it a genuinely special meal. But treating it as the definitive best meal at Disney World means you might be leaving a lot of incredible food on the table.

Disney World’s resort dining scene is deep. Citricos at the Grand Floridian offers refined, elegant dishes in a beautiful setting. Toledo at Coronado Springs serves up rooftop views and a menu worth lingering over. Topolino’s Terrace at the Riviera has a character breakfast that also happens to serve some of the best food of any character meal on property.
The point isn’t that ‘Ohana isn’t worth booking. It absolutely is. The point is that Disney World’s resorts are full of restaurants that reward curiosity, and defaulting to the same reservation every trip means you’re missing out on a lot of great meals.
The Bottom Line
Disney World hotel strategies that worked five years ago don’t always apply today, and the gap between an okay stay and a great one often comes down to a few decisions made before you ever pack a bag. Do the research, rethink your defaults, and give yourself the best possible starting point.
