Disney just dropped more details about the upcoming The Magic of Disney Animation experience at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and let’s just say…the AllEars community did not respond with quiet indoor-library energy.

One of the biggest talking points is the new Olaf Draws! Animation Academy experience, where Olaf will host the class as an Audio-Animatronics figure, while guests learn to draw with guidance from pre-recorded Disney Animation artists.
Disney says the larger Magic of Disney Animation experience is set to open in late summer 2026, with the whole courtyard area being reimagined into The Walt Disney Studios.

And while plenty of readers are thrilled that animation is returning to Hollywood Studios in some form, others are looking at this announcement the way you look at a menu after they quietly remove your favorite item and replace it with “chef’s interpretation.”
One reader summed up the mood with this absolutely searing take: “The person is what made it special, anything less than that, might as well watch Bob Ross reruns or YouTube.”
WHEW. Somebody pass the sketch pad and the aloe.

To be fair, the reaction from our readers wasn’t one-note. It was more like a full chorus of “I’m excited, but also… why are we doing this like this?” A lot of the feedback landed in that exact space.
Several readers said the human element is what made the old animation classes special in the first place. One called the change a “downgrade” and said, “Cast members are a huge part of the magic at Disney.” Another reader wrote that they were “heartbroken” because Animation Academy inspired them to become a professional artist, adding that removing the human instructor makes the experience feel less meaningful.

And honestly? That theme popped up again and again in the comments. Readers talked about missing the spontaneity, the ability for a live artist to read the room, answer questions, tell stories, and inject some personality into the class. One reader wrote, “I miss the human connection you get even in a short session. Anymore, the world just doesn’t have enough of that.”
That’s kind of the heartbeat of the whole debate, isn’t it? This isn’t just about drawing Olaf’s carrot nose in the right place. It’s about whether Disney is creating a shiny new experience… or quietly sanding off one of the things that made the original feel personal.

A few readers were even more blunt. One called it “lazy.” Another said it felt like “a big money saving move.” Yet another wondered why anyone would spend park time on something they could essentially do at home with YouTube or Disney+.
And yet, not everybody was grabbing torches and storming the animation building.

Some readers pointed out that recorded drawing classes have worked just fine on Disney Cruise Line, and others said they were simply excited that a version of Animation Academy is coming back to Hollywood Studios at all. One reader said they’re glad the experience isn’t gone completely, even if a live instructor would be better, and another noted that Olaf could be a bigger draw for kids. A few people also mentioned that the setup could allow the classes to run longer or serve more guests.

That split reaction is what makes this such a fascinating announcement. Because this is not a simple “everybody hates it” situation. It’s more like Disney handed fans a sundae with extra toppings and then forgot the spoon. There’s stuff to like here. There’s also stuff people are side-eyeing from across the courtyard.
So, what exactly is coming?
According to Disney, The Magic of Disney Animation will take over the former Star Wars: Launch Bay area in late summer 2026. The new experience is inspired by the Roy E. Disney Animation Building in Burbank and by the short film Once Upon A Studio. Inside, guests will explore playful versions of Disney Animation departments, see artwork come to life, watch Once Upon A Studio in a dedicated theater, and experience an enchanted gallery with characters appearing in the art.
One major piece of the expansion is “Off the Page!”, an area themed to the artistry behind Walt Disney Animation Studios films. Disney says guests will be able to meet characters like Mulan, Rapunzel, Chip ‘n’ Dale, Donald and Daisy, Goofy, and Stitch in spaces inspired by stages of the animation process.

There will also be an indoor play space for little ones called Drawn to Wonderland, inspired by Mary Blair’s original Alice in Wonderland concept art. Disney says it’ll include an oversized flower garden with instruments, a Mad Tea Party playset, and a Tulgey Wood exploration area. In other words, if your kid has a battery level of 974%, this is probably where Disney plans to let them burn some of that off.

Then there’s the attraction currently causing the internet eyebrow raise: Olaf Draws!
Disney says Olaf will appear as a new Audio-Animatronics figure and welcome guests into a reimagined animator’s studio. From there, pre-recorded Disney Animation artists will guide guests step-by-step through drawing different characters. Disney has already shared a lineup that includes Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Genie, Moana, Stitch, Olaf, Ursula, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. Josh Gad also recorded original dialogue for the experience as Olaf.

That means this is not just one repeated lesson looped for eternity like some kind of sketchbook Groundhog Day. Disney is clearly building variety into the experience, and there are recognizable names from the animation world attached to it. That’s important context, especially if you’re trying to decide whether this is a total skip or a “let’s see it before we riot” situation.
As for who’s going to enjoy this new attraction most, the answer is probably pretty clear.

If you’ve got young kids, a family that loves Olaf, or a crew that enjoys interactive indoor experiences with a creative twist, this is likely going to be a strong addition. If you’re the kind of parkgoer who loves character-heavy environments, hands-on activities, and air conditioning with purpose, this may be very much your speed. The larger land also sounds like it’s being designed to be more family-friendly and more flexible than the old setup.
But if your favorite part of Animation Academy was the live artist, the improvisation, the storytelling, and that little spark of Cast Member magic, you are not alone. In fact, you are in very crowded company over here in the AllEars comments section. Readers repeatedly said they wish Disney had found a way to supplement live instructors with the recorded format, instead of seemingly replacing them outright.

And that’s the real story here.
This announcement isn’t just about Olaf. It’s about what Disney fans value in park experiences. Our readers made it crystal clear that they care about more than efficiency and shiny new tech. They care about people. They care about personality. They care about those weird, tiny, human moments that can turn a simple drawing class into a core vacation memory.

So yes, Disney fans definitely have thoughts about this new Hollywood Studios announcement. Some are hopeful. Some are intrigued. Some are already drafting their breakup text for the recorded Animation Academy.
But if there’s one thing this conversation proves, it’s that the AllEars community notices the details. And when Disney changes something with this much nostalgia attached, our readers are going to clock it, dissect it, and tell us exactly how they feel about it. Loudly. Passionately. Occasionally, with Bob Ross catching a stray.
That, frankly, is the magic, too.
