Disney World fans have been buzzing ever since Disney confirmed that a Monsters, Inc.–themed land, officially known as Monstropolis, is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While excitement is high, many guests are asking the same big question: when is it actually opening? The AllEars team has been covering this project since it was announced at D23 in 2024, and here’s everything we know so far.

What Is Monstropolis?

Monstropolis is an upcoming new land inspired by Pixar’s Monsters, Inc., bringing Mike, Sulley, and the rest of the monster world to Hollywood Studios. Disney has confirmed that the land will feature a brand-new attraction, its first-ever suspended coaster inspired by the iconic door vault scene from the movie. This will be a first-of-its-kind attraction for a Monsters, Inc. theme in a Disney park. In addition to the coaster, the land is expected to include themed dining, shopping, and entertainment, though Disney has not yet released specific details.

Where Is Monstropolis Being Built?

Monstropolis is taking over the former Muppets Courtyard and the surrounding Grand Avenue area at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It has also expanded into the cast parking lot just outside of the park. Over the past year, guests have seen phased closures and visible changes as Disney prepares the space for its transformation. Longtime locations like MuppetVision 3D*, Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano, and other elements of the area have closed as construction ramps up.

Construction Progress So Far

©bioreconstruct on X has released photos that give us a look inside the construction. Construction activity has been ongoing throughout 2025. Crews have been clearing space, removing signage, repainting structures, and preparing the groundwork for the new land. Disney has also filed multiple construction permits tied to the area, further confirming that Monstropolis is actively being developed, even if much of the work is happening behind the scenes.

So… When Is Monstropolis Opening?

As of now, Disney has not announced an official opening date or even an opening year for Monstropolis. While construction is moving forward, Disney is keeping timeline details under wraps. There’s been no confirmation on whether the land will open all at once or in phases, and no official preview timeframe has been shared. Based on the scale of the project, including a major new coaster that is being built from the ground up, we can guess that this is a longer-term expansion rather than something opening in the immediate future. When Monstropolis does debut, guests can expect a fully immersive land featuring the suspended coaster, themed food and merchandise, and at least one entertainment or show element designed to bring the world of Monsters, Inc. to life.

What This Means for Hollywood Studios

Once Monstropolis opens, it will significantly reshape this section of Hollywood Studios, replacing the old Muppets Courtyard area with a major expansion. It also adds another high-capacity ride to a park that continues to evolve with immersive lands and blockbuster attractions. If Lightning Lane is still around, we will likely see the attraction added in, or could Disney bring back the Virtual Queue system for it? We will have to wait to see as we get closer to opening.

The show theater

While we don’t yet know exactly when Monstropolis will open, we do know it’s officially happening, construction is underway, and Disney is investing heavily in the project. For now, fans will have to be patient and be sure to keep an eye on AllEars.net for construction updates, permit filings, and the moment Disney finally reveals an opening timeline.
