Time to catch up!
One of the biggest announcements to come out of Disney’s D23 Ultimate Fan Event was that a full Monsters, Inc. land is coming to Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios theme park. While not much was revealed for the land outside of its anchor attraction, there was a subtle hint in Disney’s released details that could point us in the direction of what to expect.
According to Disney, the land — the location of which within the park has yet to be officially confirmed — will pick up “after the events of Pixar’s beloved film. Humans have now been invited to visit the world of Monsters, Inc. — and the monsters need laughter to power the city and keep it running smoothly. But it’s not a true visit without the factory itself. You’ll be able to see the sights, hear the laughs and zoom through the building just like James P. Sullivan (a.k.a. Sulley) and Mike Wazowski — via a door! Yes, a door. If you’ve been dreaming of riding through the door vault since the movie was released in 2001, you’re not alone — Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro has been thinking about this, too.
“The first time I saw Monsters, Inc., all I wanted to do was ride on one of those doors like Mike and Sulley,” he said. “You’ll go into the factory and experience the first suspended coaster ever in a Disney park. Remember in the movie how those claws grab the doors and hoist them up into the air to take them away? We’re doing that, too. And you’re going along for the ride.”
The part that we’re focusing on is at the very beginning of that synopsis: “after the events of Pixar’s beloved film.” So, knowing that the Monsters, Inc. land will be set after the film, we can turn and look at the franchise and see what — if any — project has been set during the period. What did we find? Monsters at Work.
Monsters at Work premiered on Disney+ in 2021, and so far has two seasons totaling near 20 episodes. The series begins “begins the day after Henry J. Waternoose III’s arrest, with the Monsters, Incorporated factory making the transition to laugh power.” The series features John Goodman and Billy Crystal reprising their roles as Sulley and Mike respectively, with Ben Feldman and Mindy Kaling portraying new characters Tylor Tuskmon and Val Little.
While we doubt that the upcoming Monsters, Inc. land at Hollywood Studios will directly link too closely with Monsters at Work, the fact that the series shares the same timeframe as the new land means that it may contain some clues as to how the world of Monsters, Inc. will be presented in the park.
With work on the as-yet untitled Monsters, Inc. land scheduled to begin in 2025, there’s still plenty of time to catch up on Monsters at Work prior to the land’s opening. Stay tuned to AllEars for further coverage of this upcoming Disney World expansion.
