Eat to the Beat Concerts: Starship

My wife, Julie, and I spent yet another day at Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival. And, that means another Eat to the Beat concert at the American Garden Theater in front of the American Adventure.

The third performer in the series was Starship. We have seen Starship perform at Epcot a number of times over the years and think they are GREAT! Mickey Thomas’s voice is still so strong and seems to get better every time I hear him sing. Also, Stephanie Calvert, who does the Gracie Slick vocals, will blow you away. What an incredible, powerful voice she has! Mickey and Stephanie compliment each other extremely well; and along with the group’s memorable songs combine to make Starship concerts special.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Starship, they are a rock group who had a number of hit songs in the 70’s and 80’s. The group has undergone many changes from it’s original roots as Jefferson Airplane, then Jefferson Starship to the present Starship featuring Mickey Thomas. Anyway, some of the groups hit songs are: Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now, Sara, Count On Me, White Rabbit, Somebody To Love and We Built This City. Some of you may remember the name “Gracie Slick” as she was the lead female vocalist of the original group. Personally I think Stephanie is much better than Gracie!

They did change up the songs in each of the sets; but made sure they included the crowd pleasing “We Built This City” in each set. Needless to say that each of the three sets were packed! I hope you get to or got to see Starship perform

  1. I saw Starship featuring Mickey Thomas several years ago at the F&W Festival. Being a child of the 70s and 80s I knew who they were but just went to the concert because I was in the area. I have to say I enjoyed it so much that I came back for their next set.

Boy, I wish I could go to all of the concerts like you do! I’m two hours away so can only make it on weekends (darn job) and have only seen BBVD this year.

Guilty pleasure – my favorite band from Eat to the Beat was Loverboy back in 2006. Took me back to my high school years! Thanks again for the great blogs.

DizneyMike replies: Sue I think it’s time to retire so you can attend all the concerts like I do. I think you’ll enjoy it! -:)

  2. We saw Starship this year and were very impressed. I had only recently heard of them, and then only because ‘We Built This City’ is on the Singstar 80s game on the PS3! But we thought they were great and were glad we had taken time out to see them.

  3. Mike, I have never heard of a Gracie Slick. I think you have her name wrong, it is Grace Slick. Thanks for your Blog entry and keep up the great work!!!

DizneyMike replies: Mark, thanks for the comments, however, for those of us who lived in that era we know that although Grace is her real name she was often referred to as “Gracie”. If you Google “Gracie Slick” you will see links to info on both Grace and Gracie: who are one in the same. Hope this clears things up for you…Mike

  4. Sounds like you had a great night at your concert. It was so much fun at Tepan Edo Friday at lunch. It was nice meeting you and your wife.

DizneyMike replies: Amber, yes it was great meeting you and your family on Friday! Thanks for sharing my birthday with me. Yes, the concert was great, too bad you guys had to go home. Hopefully you will return soon….Mike
