Tips for Disney Parks & Cruise Lines

We just returned from Walt Disney World and this time we brought handheld water misters instead of the portable fans. The water misters were small enough to fit in our water bottle holders on our backpacks and fanny packs. The water seemed to stay colder (because they are somewhat insulated), and when it got really hot, we asked for free cups of ice to fill them up. The water misters can be turned to the "on" position so you don't have to keep "squirting," and the nozzle is small enough that you can direct the sprayed mist so you don't get others wet who are waiting in line. They really kept us cool and they sell for only about $10 at Wal-mart. - Dale G.

If you carry a cellphone, put an entry in the "Phonebook" labeled "Home" or "If Found Call" and then program either your home number or your hotel number. I left my very expensive cell phone in the sand at Typhoon Lagoon. A guest found it and gave it to Lost & Found. They were able to reach me right away at home to let me know because I had an entry in the phonebook designated "Home". All I had to do was confirm the make and model of the phone and it was returned to me. - Alisa Starke

Here is one of the best tips I can offer. We have just returned from a week in Disney where it rained for three days... and over 10"!! I had forgotten to pack our umbrellas, so we had to pick up WDW rain ponchos. They were $5.66 each. I originally cringed at spending our souvenir money on them (we needed five of them). My son accidentally ripped his while trying to pull up his hood. I had commented to a Cast Member later in the day and she smiled and said "No problem!" They exchanged his poncho quickly and stated that any time your poncho rips, you can trade it in for a new one from any store that sells them. My husband's ripped on our last day and his was just as easily exchanged. Most people I told this to had no idea Disney would give you a new one. My tip: those ponchos are worth their weight in gold! - Colleen Anastasi

If you are going to have a car at WDW, go to the Wal-Mart website before you leave home and find the nearest location(s), and directions on how to get there. As it turns out, there are two stores within 10 miles of the WDW property. My family always needs something there, and it is definitely much cheaper than paying Disney prices.

Also be sure to check the website of your insurance provider for locations of acceptable urgent care facilities near WDW. The last two times we were at WDW, we had to go to urgent care. I didn't plan the first time and paid dearly. Last year was a much less painful (financially) experience. - Kent Kirby

I LOVED your article on pressed coins and I have to agree they are fabulous and inexpensive. Something I do to collect my coins and give as souvenir gifts is create jewelry. A small awl used for piercing leather works well in piercing the ends of these coins, and then simple jump rings and clasps found in Michael's or any craft store work great in connecting the coins into bracelets, key chains, earrings -- you name it! You can do these as themes, such as princesses or the Fab Five or even by parks. I once brought these home for several of my students! - Erika Swanson

Prior to our big fifth anniversary trip several years ago, my husband and I created a Disney box in anticipation of the trip. We took a large plastic school-supply box such as we had in elementary school and began decorating it. We used metallic markers to put our names and dates on it. Yet we mostly left it blank. While in Disney World, we got a sticker at one of the restaurants. We stuck it to the box. On each trip back since then, we've obtained a special sticker. For example, one of our favorite Cast Members stopped and gave us one while waiting for a parade, and we were given one in the shops for making an extra donation when we made our Animal Kingdom purchases. I date each sticker, and now our Disney box is a reflection of each trip. We're working on decorating the inside of the box now! Throughout the year, as we obtain anything for our next trip, such as Disney Dollars given to us as gifts, or Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party tickets, it all goes in the box. When we're ready to go, the box fits nicely into a suitcase or backpack. This way we never forget where we put something or lose it, and we have this great reminder of all our good times while we plan our next magical memory-making trip! - Cathy Laurice Jones

Last week a tip involved taking a highlighter on a cruise in order to plan out daily activities. Here is another take on that tip. You can use a blue highlighter, and your spouse (or companion) can use a yellow highlighter. Then the highlighted items that are green you know to do together! - Theresa Browning

This tip applies to cruisers (even non-Disney ones). Take a brightly colored highlighter with you on the cruise. As you go over the "Personal Navigator" and plan out your next day, highlight the activities you want to do. With all there is to do on a cruise, it's easy to miss something as the day progresses. By highlighting your must-do events, you won't miss them. - Keith & Sandy Link

I love the artwork that I find at Disney World shops, but the prices are a bit higher than what is budgeted in my vacation spending money. Easy solution: I buy postcards that are miniature versions of the large prints that are offered for big bucks. I spend two dollars on a postcard, matte, frame and PRESTO... a beautiful Disney masterpiece. The Mickey Mouse Norman Rockwell's are my favorites! - Fran Dodge

CHRISTMAS - Buy a Christmas ornament that commemorates that year in one of the Christmas shops. My father started this back in the early '90s and when I got married. He gave me all of them from the trips just the two of us made. Now every year when my husband, son and I decorate our Christmas tree it reminds me of each trip we have taken to the park. - Megan Kelley

If you are traveling with a young girl, around 5, buy a Princess Hat! My niece got one on her last trip and the Cast Members made such a fuss over her. She wore it every day, in every park, and someone commented every day. The CM's asked if she was a princess. The taxi boat CM said to "stand aside, we have royalty coming on board." Goofy even bowed down and worshiped her. It really made her feel very special during the trip. - Holly

We just got back from Disney World. We bought our son a Magical Moments pin, which lights up at the various shows and on rides. (A secret bonus was that on the dark or scary rides he just pushed the pin, which lit up so that he wasn't scared.) Unfortunately, even though the pin comes with replacement batteries, we went through three parks before we found that the jewelry store on Main Street USA had the screwdriver necessary to remove the back panel. Our tip: bring your own small screwdriver with you. The batteries can be purchased anywhere in the park for $1.49 + tax for one, but you need two batteries per pin. It is a wonderful keepsake. - Tracey and Mackenzie

EDITOR'S NOTE:: If you are flying to WDW and plan on bringing a screwdriver, please remember to pack it in your checked luggage, NOT in your carry-on luggage.

I just want to second this. I wore my Nike Prestos to Disney last year, and it was amazing how well my feet held up in these shoes. Not only did I save my feet from blisters, but, because the shoes are cloth, they are extremely light, so your legs are less tired. The cloth also dries much more quickly than traditional sneaker material, which is great for rainy days and water rides. They are around $80, but on a quick trip to the Nike Outlet on 192, I found them for $30-$40. I now have four pairs of them -- they are all I ever wear! - Vanessa Gold
