Tips about Food & Beverage, Kids, Mousecellaneous and Travel
Before our recent annual family trip to Walt Disney World, our daughter and son-in-law built even greater happy anticipation in their 6- and 4-year-olds. Each evening, two of the children's cherished stuffed Disney characters would magically appear someplace in the house other than the children's bedrooms. Each character would be sitting on two one-dollar bills for the coming trip. So, there were one-dollar bills for the children and one each for Mommy and Daddy. One night, the characters had instructions for a treasure hunt. In the end, two of the dollar bills were found in the collar of Gus, their Golden Retriever. One was in Grandpa's pocket, and one was in Granny's pocket. This was done for the month before the trip, along with a special calendar on which the children crossed off one day every night. - Diane Schmitz
We just got back from Disney World today... please let your readers know that "Heelys" (skate sneakers) are not permitted in any amusement park in Florida. We were stopped by a Disney employee who informed us that we could be fined up to $150 by the sheriff! - Barbara Friedman
It can become cumbersome to search all the various airlines to compare the best prices. Go to www.kayak.com, as this search engine includes the regional airlines as well (JetBlue, Southwest, etc.). It lists all the flight options and then indicates who has the price including travel sites like Cheap Seats and Expedia. - C. Kiki Leech

Fort Wilderness - This year I took my family to dinner at the Trail's End Restaurant at Fort Wilderness Campground. We made a night of it: we started at the Wilderness Lodge, then took the boat ride to Fort Wilderness to our priority seating at Trail's End, which is a very reasonably priced buffet. Then we watched the Wishes fireworks on the beach and the Electric Water Pageant from the boat dock. The kids loved the boat ride and the ducks on the beach. It makes for a lovely and relaxing evening! You could put together a similar evening at any of the Magic Kingdom resorts, although the Trail's End doesn't tend to book up early and it's inexpensive. - Dawn Goodwin

Last week, before I left on my latest WDW trip, I Googled for information about that new bypass (Highway 9A, future I-295) around Jacksonville, FL. I wasn't sure if it was open, driveable, or worth doing... Well, darned if I didn't find any clear information about it, other than that both ends do connect to I-95 and it's nearly complete. So I decided to take a chance on the drive down and check it out. I am happy to report that the 9A bypass is a great timesaver and absolutely worth doing to avoid downtown Jacksonville. Clear sailing, little traffic in the off-hours (don't know about rush hour), and only took us about 20-25 minutes. There is also a big, beautiful suspension bridge to enjoy. It's not completely converted over to interstate yet -- there is still one traffic light interchange left -- but it's not bad at all! And as soon as that's converted over to an exit, I believe it will become I-295 and be even faster. - Eve Cunning

Our standard black roll-on and carry-on suitcases were just like everyone's, and were hard to spot until I took some fabric paint and a large dog pawprint stamp and added bright yellow pawprints all over my suitcases. You could use any large simple stamp and a bright color to personalize your luggage. When my luggage comes down the carousel I sure get a lot of comments, and have no trouble picking out which is mine. - Merrily Westlake

We're headed down to the world very soon and we've been looking for ways to cut costs. At home, we've found you can save a lot by drinking water. Well, we find the water in Florida to taste a little funny because of the high content of sulfur so we didn't want to do that, but suddenly I remembered those little drink flavoring packets they have now to put into bottled water. The Crystal Light brand says to mix with 16.9 oz. of water but I've found I can go up to 24 oz. and it still tastes strong enough for me. Kool-Aid also makes the individual packets now for the kids and I noticed several other brands at the store. I can't wait to go down and use these. With drinks costing anywhere from $1.50 to around $5.00, I think this will be a huge savings for us! - Terri Daugherty

When purchasing milk, pay attention to the size and the price. During the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend I discovered at Saratoga Springs Spa & Resort, Artist Palette Restaurant a pint of milk was $1.99 and a quart of milk was $1.75. I bought the quart of milk for myself and my daughter. - Mark A. Carlson

The first thing I do each morning, no matter where I am, is drink an ice cold Diet Pepsi to wake me up. It is the only soda I really like. In Walt Disney World, though, there is not a Pepsi product anywhere. One night my husband even walked from Disney Springs to the Hess Station and they don't even carry any Pepsi products. So if you are like me and only like Diet Pepsi or a Pepsi product of any kind and won't have access to a rental car on your vacation, BRING IT WITH YOU! I wish I had known. I would have packed some in my suitcase and our mornings would have been much more pleasant. - Laurel Sloan

Regarding your latest newsletter's warning about increased traffic enforcement in and around WDW, those of you driving to the airport via the southern entrance should pay special attention to your speed when driving along Boggy Creek Road. This is not a good place to exceed the speed limit, especially if you are concerned about getting to the airport on time. - John Hayes

When we were going through security at the Orlando airport, they would not allow us through without putting our glow ice cubes in a sealed zipper bag. If we didn't do this we would have to continue on and leave the cubes with them. The TSA people all thought that the cubes have "gel" in them and are used for cooling drinks. (Further investigation on the website for the company that sells the cubes shows there IS a gel in them!) I had to leave the security line to buy a 25-cent zipper-type bag for sale next to the Universal store closest to baggage claim A, then go through the whole security thing again, just for two rather expensive ice cubes that my kids didn't want to do without. Long story short, if you want to keep those glow cubes and are flying home, make sure they're in a zipper-top bag (or in your checked luggage). You'll save lots of time and aggravation. - Fred B.

Please advise your readers that the local county sheriff's office has been aggressively handing out speeding tickets, particularly on the exit ramps to the hotels at Walt Disney World Resort where the speed limit is 25 mph. Increased sheriff presence and ticketing has also been noted on World Drive leading to the Magic Kingdom from US Hwy 192. - A Good Neighbor to WDW

Here's a tip for traveling with a young child. We recently returned from Disney World with our grandson who turned 3 while we were there. I had taken his own toddler fork and spoon with us and it made mealtimes so much easier for him. The adult size cutlery is so big and cumbersome for such small hands. - Audrey G.
Getting out of the hotel room door can be a challenge if you have a child who takes about an hour trying to figure what she wants to wear and then another half-hour getting ready. I solved this problem for my daughter on a surprise trip with a friend. I wasn't going with her so I didn't want my friend to have to experience the same problem I did when we wanted to leave for early entry to the park but could never get out the door on time. I purchased gallon zipper bags with the white area for labeling. I assembled each day's outfit right down to the "unmentionables" in the bags with a happy note written on it. This included what accessories went with the outfit, including the shoes. Since this was a surprise, I wrote a separate letter that included detailed instructions for each outfit ensemble. Not only did my friend have a worry-free time, but my daughter really appreciated the time I put into it. I had such fun doing it, too. - Christine M.
Upon leaving Baltimore on Airtran Airways, the person checking in my luggage put someone else's baggage claim on my bag and I didn't notice it. My bag ended up in Fort Lauderdale instead of Orlando. When you use Disney's Magical Express, you won't find out that there is a problem until possibly later that evening. Therefore, always check to be sure that your luggage is tagged for the correct airport and that all of your claim tickets are YOURS. This is possibly due to the increased amount of luggage that can no longer be carried on board. - Dave
