Tips about Epcot, Kids, Magic Kingdom and Transportation

EPCOT - Soarin' has become one of Epcot's most popular attractions, but many miss the chance to enhance the experience. When the attraction is loaded, guests are asked to remove loose-fitting shoes/sandals and leave them on the attraction floor. I recommend that you DO take your footwear off, for two reasons. One, it is cool to leave your shoes on the floor and then be swept away from them as the ride lifts and sweeps forward (and later, almost magically, to be returned to your original position and waiting footwear). Two, and more importantly, the sensation of bare feet dangling during the ride is so much more enjoyable. This may sound strange, but you can almost feel your feet dipping into the ocean surf or brushing against the orange trees. Try it and see what I mean. - Rich Czarnecki

Always ask about alternate arrangements, even if it seems unlikely to save you money. I made a reservation for a rental car for only a portion of our stay. After putting together our itinerary I decided to inquire about picking the car up three days earlier than originally planned. It turned out that the total cost of the rental car actually went down $15.00. Always think twice and check three times. - Ken Wilson

Taking teens to Disney? Pack waterproof watches with alarms! (The cheap discount store version is fine.) Other watches/cell phones can't be taken in the swimming pool, on water rides, etc. Waterproof watches with alarms are the perfect tool to allow responsible kids to succeed when given a bit of freedom -- and therefore to let parents nap during swim time! - Sterghe

ALL PARKS - When a Cast Member asks you how many people are in your group, tell them the ENTIRE number in your group. The Cast Members are trying to group your entire party onto the ride at the same time. If you tell them a number less than your party, don't be surprised when your party gets split up. (You might be asked by up to three different Cast Members for your party size.)

My daughter and I recently spent a week at Walt Disney World. She wanted to spend some time at DisneyQuest. We would head over to Disney Springs from our hotel. When we wanted to go back to the parks we would either go to an Epcot resort (Boardwalk, Yacht and Beach Club, Swan or Dolphin), and then take the boat to Epcot or Disney's Hollywood Studios, or we would go to a Magic Kingdom resort (Contemporary, Grand Floridian, or Polynesian) and take the monorail to Magic Kingdom. It was very easy to get from the bus stop at the resort to the transportation to the park, and it was much quicker than going back to our resort. - Hermione

Magic Kingdom - If you ever walk past Space Mountain and it's been shut down for maintenance for a few minutes, jump on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority. As the ride passes by Space Mountain, the lights will be turned on and you can see what the coaster actually looks like. As a repeat visitor to Disney World, I thought it was just about the coolest thing I'd seen all day, and it made the idea of going on the ride a lot less scary. - Allie

When we traveled to Hawaii with my young sons, ages 4 and 7, I discovered a company that makes temporary "Lost and Found" tattoos with a space to write in your telephone number. Various bands, lanyards, cards or pins can get lost during a day in the parks, but a tattoo applied to your child's arm or hand is always there. And kids love them! There are also tattoos available for allergies, autism, Alzheimer's, etc. I always use these tattoos on my children when we visit Walt Disney World now. Even the teenagers will still wear them! - Becky

A wonderful way to keep toddlers entertained is to purchase inexpensive disposable cameras for them to use. My son was 2 when he made his first visit to WDW. He loves having his picture taken and usually cries for my camera. Rather than risk losing or damaging my camera, I found disposable cameras at our local dollar store. I bought a package of four for $8. Needless to say, we have some priceless pictures! - Charlotte

Regarding Magical Express -- if, by chance, your accommodations change (we were bumped up from All-Star Sports to Port Orleans Riverside), don't assume that your luggage will make the move with you. On our first night, we got back to the room around midnight and found that our luggage wasn't there. We found out later that nobody had been informed that we'd been moved to a different resort than the original one on file. Now granted, the folks at Riverside were fantastic and were able to get our luggage to us within a half hour, but it was still a bit of an inconvenience that could've been avoided. I also found out that our departure information wasn't updated. Magical Express is an invaluable resource that we will definitely take advantage of again. People don't realize just how far away from the resort the airport really is. We just now know better so that "all our Mickeys will be in a row" next time. - Mark Greenwald
One assumption we made that was incorrect was that you could take a bus from Disney Springs to the theme parks. You have to go back to one of the resorts and then go from there. Another tip is that if you are staying at Port Orleans, like we did, you are better off taking the boat to Disney Springs rather than the bus. It runs much more often. - Deanna M. Grebe

ALL PARKS - As a teacher I have found the park maps to be a wonderful way to teach map skills to my first graders. I always make sure to pick up a handful for my students. I also laminate them and put them in our reading basket. Even laminated, they get a lot of wear. Too bad...I guess I'll have to go back for replacements! - Rae Vautrin

I just returned from a fun-filled week at the World. When renting my car from National I was pleasantly surprised that they now offer some minivans with built-in car seats (subject to availability)! This saved me from having to rent a car seat from National -- a savings of $50! I suggest parents with toddlers check it out. The seat is for children weighing 22-41 pounds. - Dana Galiano
