6 Airlines Are Cutting Flights in 2025

Air travel could be a bit more limited in 2025.

Traveling is difficult enough without keeping up with the statuses of airlines. That’s where we come in. We routinely follow all the latest air travel updates, including which airlines are adding or cutting flights.

We’ve been monitoring most airline situations — especially how it affects theme park travel — and there are 6 major airlines that have announced cutting flights in 2025.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest has been making a lot of waves the past year and most of the news hasn’t been warmly received.

Earlier this year, Southwest announced that it will reduce its capacity in the second half of the year in anticipation of fewer domestic bookings in 2025.

Southwest’s cuts come on the heels of announcements that the company will begin charging for checked bags on May 28th, 2026, and will move to assigned seating in 2026.

Frontier Airlines

Budget airline Frontier Airlines is also feeling the economic pressure and is cutting flights in 2025.

A lack of demand earlier in the year has meant that Frontier will offer fewer flights, but will continue to lower fares with deals in an effort to attract more prospective passengers.

Delta Airlines

Delta Airlines is another airline you should expect to see cut back on flights.

Delta is reevaluating its 2025 outlook and reconsidering expanding its flight plans.

United Airlines

Don’t expect to see an increase in domestic flights from United Airlines any time soon.

United is anticipating cutting about 4% of its domestic flights starting in July 2025.

American Airlines

Like other airlines, American is experiencing a decrease in demand.

This airline has already cut routes, reduced employment, and shortened customer service hours.

Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines can be added to the growing list of airlines cutting flights, although this one may be the least shocking.

Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2024 and has been adding and removing flights since, including pulling back domestic flights from major cities like Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, and New Orl

Now, Spirit is eliminating 12 more domestic routes, including flights between Atlanta and New York, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, and New Orleans and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Other affected routes include flights from Burbank to San Jose and Oakland, as well as from Los Angeles to Reno, Salt Lake City, and San Jose. These cuts are already underway and will be completed by March of this year.

Flights from New York to both New Orleans and West Palm Beach, Florida, are also being removed.

The airline states that it regularly reviews its routes and makes changes based on market demand and company strategy. Some of these flights were offered seasonally and will not return, while others had low ticket sales.

“As part of this process, we adjusted our upcoming schedule to focus on our strongest performing routes in alignment with our current fleet size,” a Spirit spokesperson stated.
