EPCOT’s Japan pavilion is one of our favorites in World Showcase thanks to its sprawling architecture and authentic detailing. However, there are some things that first time — or first time in a long time– visitors need to remember before visiting the pavilion.

From shopping to dining to shows to rides… or lack thereof… knowing these things is key to making the most of time spent in Japan!
Remember There’s No Ride
EPCOT’s Japan Pavilion has a lot going for it. One thing it doesn’t have? A ride. It’s not for lack of trying, however, as several rides have been planned for the Japan Pavilion over the years. These include a roller coaster that would weave in and out of a recreation of Mt. Fuji that would culminate with an encounter with Godzilla, and a bullet train simulator attraction.

In addition, a version of the Meet the World animatronic show that was an opening day attraction at Tokyo Disneyland was initially planned for the park, with a show building having been built. Plans were scrapped, allegedly due to issues with the building’s construction, though this may simply be an urban legend.

Don’t Forget Matsuriza
The Matsuriza drum show features a group of traditional Japanese drummers performing “intricate musical arrangements on giant drums in a dazzling display of pure physical stamina.” The show is offered most days of the week throughout the afternoon.

Don’t Get Overwhelmed by the Large Merchandise Selection
EPCOT’s outpost of Mitsukoshi — the Japanese department store which can trace its lineage all the way back to 1673 — is chock-full of souvenirs that celebrate Japanese culture. These include clothing, jewelry, books, pillows, household items, manga, toys, and statuettes from popular anime, authentic Japanese snacks, and even merchandise for superstar Major League Baseball Player Shohei Ohtani.

The large amount of merchandise is awesome — and almost awe-inspiring– to look at, but can become overwhelming and lead to impulse purchases if you’re not careful. Speaking of merchandise…

You Can Buy — But NOT Drink — Glass Bottled Drinks in the Park
One of the more popular offerings available at Mitsukoshi is Ramune, a Japanese soda often served in Japanese restaurants and available at many international grocery stores, like H-Mart. This soda comes in glass bottles, and you use a topper wrapped in a protective wrapper on top to pop the glass ball into the soda, effectively opening it. However, if you purchase this soda for $4.99, you won’t be able to drink it at all in the park since glass bottles aren’t allowed. Instead, you’ll need to bring the drink home or back to your hotel. Thankfully, this drink doesn’t have to be refrigerated, so you can carry it around with you during your park day.

Takumi-Tei Restrictions
Finally, if you’re planning to eat at the pavilion’s Takumi-Tei — an authentic Japanese dining experience featuring “5 beautiful rooms, each inspired by a natural element–water, wood, earth, stone or washi paper” and offering multi-course omakase tasting menus made up of creatively prepared, Japanese-inspired dishes – there are a few restrictions to keep in mind.
Takumi-Tei Restaurant
Services: Table Service
The restaurant has a dress code requiring “attire that adheres to the restaurant’s sophisticated and upscale aesthetic,” with clothing expected to be clean, neat, and in good condition, and an age limit of 8 and above.

Next time you find yourself traveling the World Showcase, be sure to keep these rules in mind before heading into the Japan Pavilion. Stay tuned to AllEars for more EPCOT tips.
