What Happens When a Disney World Park Hits Capacity?

Disney World is busy, busy, busy right now! The holidays in the parks can be some of the most packed days of the year when it comes to crowds, and this year has surprised us.

New Year’s Eve Crowds in EPCOT last year!

With New Year’s Eve coming up soon, we’re preparing for the crowds to take over in Magic Kingdom and EPCOT. That’s why we’re sharing exactly what happens when a theme park hits capacity!

The holidays are here, which means so are the crowds! While hitting capacity doesn’t mean the parks will be too full forever, it can throw a wrench in your plans if you’re not prepared. Disney World has removed the Theme Park Reservation System for the majority of guests. Having a ticket or dining reservation doesn’t necessarily mean you have guaranteed entry into the park of your choosing.

It’s fairly rare for a park to hit capacity, which just means it can’t accept any more visitors until the current guests leave. In 2024, Disney didn’t have any phased closures due to capacity during the holiday season. Based on this year’s crowds, we think there’s a low chance they will hit capacity in 2025. Magic Kingdom is the park that’s most likely to hit capacity during these busier seasons, and even then, it’s only temporary when they stop admitting guests.

When a park hits capacity, there are a few steps Disney takes. First, they will close the parking lots off, and they’ll only allow guests who arrive at the gates must be arriving on Disney World transportation. After that, only Disney World resort guests will be admitted inside the park. Finally, if there’s still a crowd problem, this is when Disney will restrict entrance to all guests at the gate. You won’t have to find out the hard way, though. The My Disney Experience app will send push alerts to your phone if there are capacity restrictions.

If you want to check at your convenience, you can call (407) 560-5000 to hear a recorded message about theme park availability. For Annual Passholders, if you have a reservation and want to park hop, you will need to stop by Guest Relations to see if you can still get inside. Annual Passholders aren’t counted in the overall theme park ticket capacity, and their numbers will fill up before traditional theme park tickets. For resort guests and traditional ticket holders, you should be accounted in the capacity for each park and are okay to park hop.

The best way to make sure you can get into your chosen park is to go early! The parks don’t tend to hit capacity until much later in the day, so arriving early is a great way to guarantee your spot in the theme park well before it’s time for fireworks. Based on conversations we’ve had with Cast Members this week, they feel confident the parks shouldn’t hit capacity this year. That being said, no one can truly know until the day of!
