We have a lot of things to look forward to at Magic Kingdom. In the coming years, there will be a new Villains land, two new Cars attractions, a Pirates of the Caribbean Tavern, and a new nighttime parade.
However, something is coming on January 6th, 2025, that will be a game changer for this iconic park.
On January 6th, 2025, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be closing for a lengthy refurbishment. We don’t have an exact reopening date, but Disney has announced that the attraction won’t be reopening until 2026.
Yep, you read that right, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be closed for at least a year. That means that crowds that would normally be at this attraction will now be forced elsewhere which could mean longer lines for other attractions.
As well, construction on the Cars attractions is currently expected to begin sometime in 2025 as well. Between the construction work on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad AND the Rivers of America area, we could be seeing a lot of construction walls and hearing a lot of construction noises in 2025.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is undergoing lengthy maintenance, but we are expecting the ride to stay almost entirely the same as it is now. Disney has announced that the attraction will “reopen with a little bit of new magic,” so there will likely be some minor changes but probably nothing totally ride-altering.
We will be sure to keep an eye on how the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closure will affect Magic Kingdom next year. If you do have a trip planned, while it can be disappointing for an iconic ride to be closed, there is still so much to do in Magic Kingdom!
While Magic Kingdom will definitely look a bit different beginning January 6th, you will still have a great time in this park. In fact, we have a video that has 20 things you MUST-DO in Magic Kingdom so make sure to check it out:

So, you don’t expect Big T to be significantly different after a whole YEAR of Referb? I’m hoping an extension of the original ride, featuring indoor AA scenes inspired by Marc Davis’s designs for the proposed Western River Expedition! These would be housed in a building on th other side of the MK railroad tracks. As for the proposed Cars rides and Villainsland, WDI is making a FATAL mistake! Cars never existed in the WILD WEST. By removing the Rivers of America, they would utterly destroy Frontierland! I wonder whether WDI knows that the MK ALREADY HAS A CAR RIDE- the Speedway! After riding it last Sunday, I was reminded how slow and sad it is! The Cars, which are extremely hard to climb in and out of, a f e powered by loud and smelly gas- burning lawnmower engines! The ride was one of the park’s original rides. Yet, after 53 years, it has not been updated! The new Cars rides would be the PERFECT replacement for this badly dated attraction. By doing so, the beloved Rivers of America would be saved. Also, there are eight acres of undeveloped land behind Fantasyland- plenty of room for Villainsland!
