From time to time, Disney World attractions will close for temporary refurbishments. These closures are usually announced in advance and can last anywhere from a couple of days to over a year.
On the other hand, rides can also close down unexpectedly for technical issues, weather, or many other reasons. Luckily, they are generally up and running again later in the day. However, we stumbled upon a ride closure in Magic Kingdom that was very sudden and unexpected, and it won’t reopen for at least a couple of days!
We happened to be in Magic Kingdom on November 11th when we spotted a sign up at the Liberty Square Riverboat entrance. It stated that the riverboat was temporarily closed and being refitted. It also said, “We will receive passengers and freight again soon”
When we spoke to a Cast Member about the unexpected closure, they shared that the Liberty Belle should be open again by Wednesday, November 13th.
This temporary “refitting” is unexpected as the riverboat had just recently undergone a multi-day refurbishment in August. From August 20th through August 22nd, it was closed for what was likely routine maintenance. So seeing it closed once again less than two months later was very surprising!
The Rivers of America, and therefore Liberty Square Riverboat, along with Tom Sawyer Island, will be permanently closing sometime in the near future so work can begin on the two new Cars attractions that will be replacing these attractions. Work is set to begin early in 2025 at Frontierland.
Hopefully, the Liberty Square Riverboat will be up and running again soon so guests can get a chance to ride it before it’s gone forever! We’ll be on the lookout for updates on Wednesday.
