Over the last half-decade, EPCOT has transformed. The park’s “reimagining” has seen a restructuring of Future World into distinct and newly landscaped neighborhoods, as well as additions including Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Test Track 3.0. This area is now better known as World Discovery, which explores the wonders of science and technology.

However, one pavilion in the front half of the park that was supposed to be a MAJOR part of the new EPCOT has instead sat completely abandoned for years.
To understand why EPCOT has an empty pavilion, we first have to understand what it used to be. Built between the then-Universe of Energy and the then-World of Motion, Wonders of Life opened at EPCOT in 1989. The pavilion, dedicated to health care, the human body, physical fitness, medicine, and nutrition, was initially a hit thanks to the advanced-for-the-time simulator attraction Body Wars and the popular Cranium Command show. However. As EPCOT evolved with the additions of Test Track, Mission Space, and Soarin’ in the late 90s and early 2000s, its popularity sagged. The pavilion closed in 2007, and for the next decade, it was used as a temporary Festival Center during the park’s annual events.

In 2019, Disney announced plans to turn the space into the new Play! Pavilion, which would be themed to be an “interactive futuristic city where guests would be able to interact with a variety of Disney characters.” Planned attractions for Play! were announced to include an Animation Academy-like experience where Edna Mode teaches guests to draw, the Hotel Heist interactive game hosted by Zootopia’s Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, an arcade, a Monorail Mark X, and a water balloon fight video game experience with various Disney characters.

However, like many Disney projects at the time, the 2020 COVID pandemic massively curtailed Disney’s plans for the Play! Pavilion. In March of 2020, the parks closed, and construction halted. Even after the Disney World parks reopened later that summer — and work on other EPCOT projects resumed — work on the Play! Pavilion remained stalled, and Disney remained quiet on the subject. In 2023, the pavilion was quietly removed from park maps. The following year, Disney said the opening of Communicore Hall marked the end of the “reimagining” project, and finally, earlier this year, Disney removed the Play! Pavilion flag.

Suffice to say, the Play! Pavilion is dead and buried. So, what should Disney do with the massive, abandoned structure?

Well, we have ideas, with some more… realistic than others:
- Disney could refurbish and rebuild Cranium Command and Body Wars, relaunching the Wonders of Life Pavilion as a nostalgic nod to the park’s past.
- Disney could also restart work on the Play! Pavilion project, simply restarting the work and development that had been going on in 2020. After all, nothing says that Disney can’t simply resurrect the project.
- If not, the Play! concept, something similar targeting kids – – perhaps with elements like character dance parties and playgrounds – – that counter EPCOT’s usual tendency to cater to more “mature” audiences.
- Disney could appeal to the hardcore EPCOT fans and use the pavilion’s space to rebuild the legendary Horizons…
- … or they could expand Marvel’s presence in the park from Cosmic Rewind, which is located next door. The EPCOT purists would love that, right?

So, (mostly) kidding aside, what is Disney going to do with the former Wonders of Life/never-was Play! Pavilion? Well, we’re not sure, but there’s a chance we could get more answers at this summer’s D23 Ultimate Fan Event. After all, currently, EPCOT is the only Disney World park without a massive construction project, so it doesn’t feel outside the realm of possibility. Stay tuned to AllEars for any and all updates on the future of the resort.
