Tips about Pins, Planning, Resorts and Souvenirs

If you're a teenage girl (like me) and you're going to Disney, bring your cellphone or iPod with you! It's nice to be able to listen to your music while waiting in line. Another thing: make sure you put your name and address on everything -- with iPods or mp3 players, stick some white tape on the back and write your info with a pen or marker, because Disney will return items if they find them! - Stephanie

For those who hate using all of those plastic bags that you get every time you go to buy another souvenir at the gift shops, Disney is now selling a reusable option. For $5.95, reusable tote bags (that come in a variety of colors) are now an option. I saw them being sold at multiple parks and at Disney Springs. These tote bags come in a small pouch with a clip attached for when the bag isn't in use. It's easy to keep with you, and it's a way to reduce your plastic waste. Go Disney! - Jennifer B

Since dresser drawers are few in the rooms, bring along one of those hanging closet organizers for each child with at least seven slots. You can place your child's shorts, t-shirts, socks, underwear, etc. in the cubes thus saving on drawer space. - Barbara D.

Going through the metal detectors at the park entrances, you have to remove celebratory buttons and put them in the little bins with other metal objects. I just returned from a terrific stay at the Grand Floridian and wanted to share a unique experience if you're looking for something extra-special. My husband surprised me with an Intimate Dining Experience. It's a two-hour dining experience for up to four people, even if staying off-property, with a choice of locations throughout the resort, personalized menus and a butler. Ours was on a balcony of the Grand Floridian with a view of the lagoon and fireworks. It was arranged directly through the front desk at the Grand Floridian. - Denise D.

I thought that Alice McNutt Miller's post about money saving tips was spot on. Our family has enjoyed Disney World every few years and I always consult the AllEars® tips database while planning. One tip that I would add to Alice's list is considering travel during the room-only discount periods. This way you can combine frugal and fairly extravagant if you're willing to move from value/moderate to deluxe for a few days (especially to the BoardWalk area). Our kids felt like it was two vacations in one. - Jack

Don't be too quick to dismiss the Deluxe resorts. For the UK visitor, free dining is usually not available at the Value resorts, while the Quick Service plan is included at the Moderates and the regular dining plan comes with Deluxe or Villas. We have found that it can often work out cheaper for us to book a villa when free dining is included than it would be to book at a Value resort and buy a dining plan or just pay for food as we went along. - Debi

When we go to WDW we keep the kiddie meal Mickey-shaped plates as souvenirs. They wash up nicely (top-rack dishwasher) and have three compartments. I usually use one of the "ears" to put their cups into so that they don't tip them over. They last long, too. We've had ours since the summer! - Kari Svinarich

CHRISTMAS - I'm 14 and today I was decorating my mini Christmas tree in my bedroom. Since we are going to the World on December 15, I was trying to think of a way to bring Disney magic to my tree. Then I found the perfect thing! I took all of my pins and laid them out on my bed. Then, I took some thread and cut pieces about five inches long and looped the thread around the pointy part leaving the back on. Simply tie the string together and *ta-da* you have an instant ornament! It also puts your pins on display instead of them sitting on a shelf gathering dust. - Leah

Remember when you're purchasing merchandise at Walt Disney World and using Disney's shipping to send it out of state, sales tax should not be charged. Sometimes new cast members don’t know this or long-time veterans simply forget. Be sure to check your sales receipt. - Jack Spence

Fort Wilderness - I recently returned from Fort Wilderness and discovered that the "petting farm" is now called the "pony pond." There are a few Shetland ponies and miniature ponies but no other animals and there is no more feeding. We really enjoyed seeing "Qes," one of the horses in the stable we had seen the day before pulling the trolley down Main Street, USA. - Josh Steiner

I print out clear labels with all of our information and bring along extra to label everything that we get new at the parks, from our cups to our PhotoPass. The extra labels are great in case you do forget to label something before you leave and the clear labels blend right in. - Cara Martin

My tip is for the trading pins. We always have problems with the backs falling off and my girls have lost a few pins (as well as had some near misses). This past trip, my husband bought a small bag of the locking backs (which are not cheap) and honestly, we even had problems with them falling off. On the day we were in Animal Kingdom, as he was putting the locking back on some of the pins, we starting talking to a nice man who is really into the pin thing. He told us a trick he does with the rubber Mickey-shaped pin backs and he has never lost one: As you start to put the black rubber back on, push the "handle" part of the back to the side, so that the "stem" pushes through at an angle, and sticks out the side of the handle part of the back. My family and I are currently on holiday in Florida, and we were approached the other day in the Magic Kingdom by two cast members who told us we had been selected at random to receive special "Year of a Million Dreams" lanyards, complete with two pins which cannot be bought, and therefore should not be traded. Naturally, we were delighted, but if you are the lucky recipient of one of these lanyards, please be warned -- three of us have lost our pins, which have accidentally fallen off. The Mickey shaped backs are not very secure, and unfortunately we didn't notice we had lost them until it was too late. Better to remove the pins as soon as you get them, keep them safe, and simply wear your special lanyard. - Kirsten Tomlinson from Montrose, Scotland
