Tips about Mousecellaneous and Photography

Ever wonder how much walking you do at the different parks, or on different days? So did we. A couple of years ago I bought an inexpensive pedometer basically for this purpose. You may want to consider this, as it gives you a little more to talk about after your vacation. We keep a daily log of the miles we walk and share it with our friends back home. Also you will either confirm what you already think about how far you walk, or you may be quite surprised that you walked as far as you did. I noticed in some of the online forums that many people will use their vacation as a reason or inspiration to get in shape. After all, you will need your "walkin' shoes" in the World! I, too, have begun walking in the mornings for exercise... inspired by our pending trip to that Magical Place! My tip is: there are many new sources for podcasts about Disney World. Listening to these podcasts really makes your walk go quickly! You don't need an iPod to listen; any MP3 player will do, or even burn them to disc for your old-fashioned CD Walkman! - Tom in Connecticut

Just a reminder to put at least your phone number, and preferably a name and address on your film rolls and/or digital camera memory cards! They are so small and easy to misplace. I found a sandwich bag full of film last time I was at Disney and could do nothing more than turn it in to Lost and Found. I would have been happier to have been able to mail it back to the owner! - Christina Wrobel

While preparing for our trip and reading all the tips I could find, I came across the tip about getting the dish wipes for washing out the refillable cups or anything else you might need to wash. I thought that it was an excellent tip and set out to try to find them. I looked in every store in my area trying to find them, but could not. Finally I decided to try to make my own. I got some thick baby wipes and laid them flat on the kitchen counter. I squeezed on some dish soap and left them to dry until the next day. When they were dry, I put them in a zipper top bag. It worked perfectly and I was able to use things I already had around the house! - Angela B.

My son used a disposable camera on a recent trip to Disney. On our last day we went to Animal Kingdom. It rained all day and we went on water rides so his camera got soaked. When we were looking at cameras before we went, he had picked up one of those waterproof cameras and I told him we didn't need it. Well, I wish we had it -- it probably would have saved our pictures. Most of them had funny lines through them, I'm sure from the water. - Cindy

This tip is inspired by the reader who suggested bringing the laptop for digital picture upload: If you own an iPod, you can buy a cable that connects the iPod to your camera and use the hard drive to store your photos until you can transfer them at home. - Lisa Rant

Just thought I'd advise everyone with digital cameras to bring an extra disk to store your photos on. This is a good backup. The convenience of having your laptop computer at the hotel makes it easy to download your pictures and clear your memory stick, but having an extra disk to burn all these photos to is a good thing, especially if you don't store your photos on the 'net until your trip ends and you're back home. There's lots of magic still going on at WDW; you wouldn't want to lose those great M&Ms (memory makers). - Lois Bernhardt

Save those receipts! Twice our receipts from food service locations at Walt Disney World included a 20 percent off total merchandise purchase (from store opening to 1 p.m.) coupon at the bottom, good at select locations, good through January 5. Velcro makes a 3/4-inch x 10-foot roll with the hooks on one side and the loops on the other so it sticks to itself. I bought mine in Walmart but I've also seen it in Home Depot. I cut it off in one-foot lengths to attach a mug or folded windbreaker to my belt loop. It has a hundred uses, and rolls up to fit in a pocket or backpack. - Brian Phillips

Every year we take a picture of our three children in front of the fountain with the water going up in Epcot. There is also a tree in the picture. It really shows how the kids grow and change when put against the same background every year. In the first one, we only have one child and she is in a stroller, and the tree is little. Sixteen years and pictures later, we have three children. The oldest (the girl from the stroller in the first picture) is now 18 and a college freshman, and the tree has grown a lot, too! - M. Eaton

EPCOT - Walking through Epcot this past weekend, I saw lots of folks taking photos of family and friends through the Goofy frame, located just past the Canada pavilion and the Refreshment Port, on the way to Showcase Plaza. If you are looking straight at the frame, you will get a lovely photo, with the water in the background. However, for an even better shot, move slightly to the left and crouch down a bit. I enjoy using my SLR camera for trip photography, but it's no fun to carry a large camera bag around PLUS a backpack with snacks, raincoat, etc. In my quest to solve this problem, I've discovered a wonderful backpack/camera bag combo! There's a separate, padded camera bag section at the bottom that is accessed by its own zippers. The top of the bag is a typical backpack, with a padded back. The style I bought has a hipbelt as well as the shoulder straps, and is very comfortable to carry! I found mine on eBay by searching for "camera backpack," and have since seen others in photography stores. For anyone concerned about their camera/video equipment, this is a great way to carry it all safely around the parks! - Bethany Lewis

Hang on to your hat! My husband wears a baseball cap to prevent sunburn. He was astounded to have it fly off his head on the Tower of Terror. He was very relieved he caught it. What he didn't realize was that our brand new annual passes had been in his front shirt pocket. They, too, had levitated. Fortunately, the Cast Member saw them and called our names. WHEW! - TJ

For $.79 at your local Target store you can purchase a clear plastic coupon holder in the office supply department. It's 5" x 7" in size, has a Velcro closure, and is perfect for holding your tickets, money, etc. It keeps everything from getting wet on the water rides and is easy to find in your backpack!
