Tips about Countdown and Planning

In order to get my 7- and 5-year-old boys even more excited about the upcoming Disney trip, we made our Disney "favorites" page. We used our old Disney brochures and each person cut out their favorite place, ride, food, etc. from the last trip and five things that they want to do on this upcoming trip. We added stickers and original art work. We put each page next to our Countdown to Disney calendar so that each day the excitement grows! This also helped me in planning our trip, because now I know the five things each boy wants to do while at Disney! - Shellee Blaxton

We just got back from Disney World today... please let your readers know that "Heelys" (skate sneakers) are not permitted in any amusement park in Florida. We were stopped by a Disney employee who informed us that we could be fined up to $150 by the sheriff! - Barbara Friedman

For all WDW visitors from the UK -- try to find jet-setting friends who will bring you home US coins, quarters especially, because when you land at Orlando they're jolly useful for tolls. All Star Resorts - My husband, 4-year-old son and I just returned from a fantastic 10-day WDW trip and one of the best things we did was ship a small coffee pot with filters and coffee packets to our All-Star resort ahead of time since they do not provide coffee pots in those rooms. What a treat it was to just wake up and make our own personal pot of coffee each morning. We tried to book a room for the first week of December. Not a single room was available at any Disney resort. The Disney representative suggested looking at a resort that was still on Disney property but not an actual Disney resort. She said the Buena Vista Palace had rooms available. They are located across from Disney Springs and offer bus service via Mears shuttles. I called them directly and because I'm a firefighter was able to get a greatly reduced rate that isn't offered at Disney resorts! (It's called the "government rate." I just had to show my firefighter ID when I checked in.) - Alexiss from MA

When we were getting ready for our Disney trip I put little notes in my daughters' lunchboxes each day, counting down the days until our trip. We had planned out each day and which park we would visit, so the week before we left the notes read, "On this day next week you will be at (insert name of park)." My one daughter was a freshman in high school and the other was in eighth grade, so imagine how their lunchtime went each day when they would open their lunchboxes to discover the notes I had left for them. To help my daughter with her excitement and anticipation of how many more days until we go to see Mickey, I borrowed an idea from my Advent Christmas calendar. I made a calendar starting the month of our trip. On each day I wrote a message, such as "Bring up the luggage," "Don't forget your sunglasses," or "Minnie can't wait to have breakfast with you." I covered up the secret messages with Mickey heads that I made from black construction paper. Every day she would get up and remove the Mickey, and we would read the message and be one day closer to our visit. - MinnieMom1

This year I bought the travel BINGO cards at a store before we left for Disney World. I gave each of my children a card when we got in the car. The first round of BINGO was postage stamp, the next round was horizontal, etc. Each time one of the kids won, they would receive a Disney Dollar. The final round was a $10 Disney Dollar. Of course, no one wants to leave Disney World, so on the way home they played BINGO again. This time, while we were there, I had picked up a few pins, pens, an ornament, keychains, and a cup for the prizes. The grand prize was another $10 Disney Dollar to save for the next trip. - K. We bought her a medium-size piggybank and told her that when she filled it up, we would go to Disney World. She gets so excited now for any little amount of change that it seems like the magic of Disney has already started! We have already booked our trip, but haven't told her yet. Our plan is to try to get her bank filled a day or two before we leave so that she really thinks she made it! My 4-year-old is so excited that she was asking and asking how long before we go to Disney or, "Are we going today?" A friend of mine suggested making a paper chain to count down the days until we take flight. I can t stress enough what a great idea this is. She wakes up excited to take one of the "links" off the chain and see it get smaller and smaller. She no longer asks how long; she just takes a look at the chain and points to the last one and says, "That's when we are going to Disney." I also added the corresponding number to each chain and on the last one I wrote, "We are on our way to Disney today." She absolutely loves it. - Christine McCarthy

Flying the red-eye from Las Vegas to Orlando (three-hour time difference) on the first day of your vacation, after exhausting months of work earning this vacation, guarantees that when the excitement wears off you will hit the wall hard! I love the researching and planning and getting the most for my time and money, but stop! Think! After three eight-day vacations, I've learned that the best time I ever had was when I didn't hit the parks on the first day, but instead went to a water park for some exercise and sunshine (to reset my clock), then to World of Disney in Disney Srpings to get my pin collecting/souvenir shopping out of the way (check for discount deals from Disney Visa), then to an early seating at 'Ohana at the Polynesian. Trust me, a slow start will give you tons more energy over the next few days. - Leslie Seibert
