When planning a Disney World trip, you probably know you’re going to be waiting in lines for rides at some point. While some queues are pretty dang fun, you probably want to limit the number of times you wait in line so you can do the most and have the best vacation yet.

One way to save time in line can be to rope drop, which is getting to the park before it opens. Fewer people come exactly when the parks open, and wait times are often at their lowest, but what ride should you head to? We have a new strategy we’re testing out to see what wins!
If you’re a Disney World hotel guest, you get to enter the park 30 minutes before non-resort guests, which means you get 30 minutes of extra ride time. The catch? Only Tomorrowland and Fantasyland are open during this early entry period. Now, it might be tempting to head to one of those two lands because obviously you want to get on the ride first, right?

Well, instead of heading to those two lands, we went straight to Frontierland, even though it’s not open. Even though it wasn’t open for riding, we were able to line up to enter the land before the non-resort guests came in, so when the park officially opens, we’ll be in the first group in the land.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is closed right now for a refurbishment, but it will reopen this spring, and while it was always popular, we think it’s going to be even MORE popular with the reopening. We would probably head there first and then onto Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, weather permitting, of course.

Instead of Frontierland, you can also do this with Adventureland or Liberty Square, too! It’s great for the Jungle Cruise, and while you might be able to find the Haunted Mansion with lower waits later in the day, if you know you can’t live without it, it’s not a bad choice either.

When we tested our strategy, we only waited five minutes for the Jungle Cruise! This ride can get up to two hours long during the middle of the day.

Something else you’ll want to keep in mind is that sometimes rides don’t open in the morning due to delays or weather. Rides like Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and TRON / Lightcycle Run close when there’s lightning and thunder, and since they’re pretty technical rides, they might not open at all during your early entry. It’s a good idea to have a backup ride you can head to if it is closed.
