How Much Does It Cost to Build a Lightsaber in Disney World Now?

If you’re looking to check out a galaxy far, far, away, you won’t need a spaceship! That’s right, at most, you’ll just need to hop on a plane to explore a planet called Batuu in the world of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Quincy and I with her lightsaber!

In Galaxy’s Edge, you can be arrested by the First Order, try out some delicious space food, and even build your own lightsaber. After spending quite a bit of time on planet, I’ve decided to break down exactly how much it is to actually build your own space energy sword.

Savi’s Workshop is the ultimate stop for Star Wars fans of any age. This location in Galaxy’s Edge is where “gatherers” assemble scrap metal and crystals to help fans create their own, customizable lightsabers.

Savis Workshop

This “secret” spot has been a staple in Galaxy’s Edge since it opened in 2019. It’s always been considered a splurge in my book, but how much is it actually? Well, it’s important to know what the price includes before we reveal it. The location offers more than just a souvenir; it focuses on the experience of creating your own personal Star Wars merchandise. The experience includes your choice of:

    • 1 hilt
    • 4 sleeves (pick 2)
    • 2 emitters (pick 1)
    • 2 pommel caps (pick 1)
    • 2 sets of activation plates and switches (pick 1 set)
A Cast Member helping us during our experience.

To kick off the experience, we checked in with the Gatherers (Cast Members) outside, where we chose from 1 of 4 kinds of lightsabers. These include:

    • Peace and Justice
Salvaged scraps from fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships in these Republic-era designs honor the galaxy’s former guardians.
    • Power and Control
Originally forged by dark side warriors, this style features rumored remnants from the Sith homeworld and abandoned temples.
    • Elemental Nature
This theme embodies the Force— an energy created by all living things, like Brylark trees, Cartusion whale bones, and Rancor teeth.
    • Protection and Defense
Hilt materials bear mysterious motifs and inscriptions that reconnect users with the ancient wellspring of the Force.

Quincy chose Elemental Nature for her saber (I was her guest to experience it with her). She got a specific card and pin before starting the experience that were based on her choice.

Her card and pin!

We went to her building station, and a master gatherer led us through the building experience. Our gatherer told us all about Kyber Krystals, which power lightsabers, and what each color represents. You can choose from red, green, violet, and blue. I helped Quincy choose blue!

Her lightsaber hilt pieces were presented to her before the building began! During your experience (the same as ours), you will start with your crystal, and then you’ll build the hilt around it. When you’re done, the assistants will take the hilt and attach it to the blades. This is where things get super cool for Star Wars fans.

Quincy’s choices when she built her lightsaber!

Once everyone is done, they dim the lights in the room, and the master gatherer will begin a countdown before everyone lights up their souvenirs for the first time. And before you ask, yes, you do hear that very familiar sound when the moment happens.

I got CHILLS!

Even just watching this experience was so amazing as a Star Wars fan myself. After that, they gave us a carrying case for our lightsaber to protect it for the rest of our park day. So yes, this is way more than just buying merchandise in Hollywood Studios.

While it might be incredible, we will admit it isn’t free (despite our pleas). In 2019, when it first began, each lightsaber cost $199.99 plus tax. After nearly 7 years of operation on Batuu, the cost for this experience has risen by roughly $80. At the time of writing, each lightsaber costs $274.99 plus tax. So, almost double a theme park ticket to get into Hollywood Studios.

For nearly $300, this experience is made for passionate Star Wars fans or anyone looking for a big splurge during their trip.  It is an incredible experience, but it definitely is something you need to think about ahead of time! Reservations are highly recommended for this experience, but you can try to walk-up although there are no guarantees. 1. You’re right that the money is for the experience, not the lightsaber. The Disney sabers aren’t bad, but you can get much higher quality ones for significantly less through other sources.

I tried to explain that to Disney in an email after being sorely disappointed by experience at the CA park. The whole thing felt really rushed. I was trying to take it all in and savor it, but at one point one of the attendants grabbed my pieces out of my hands and put them together for me. Hey, I know what to do, I’m trying to enjoy doing it! And the person leading the whole thing did not seem into it AT ALL. I’ve rarely heard actors sound like they just reading lines as much as that woman did. And Disney’s response to my email was pathetic.

I wish I’d just spent $125 on a lightsaber I could actually hit things with.
